When Manchester’snew bike rental scheme Mobike launched just two weeks ago its creators insistedthese were ‘vandal-proof’ machines.

However, despite the innovative schemebeing well-received by the vast majority of Mancunians, there have been anumber of attempts to break or steal the city’s fleet of new bikes.

Nearly 20 incidents of theft or vandalism -included two being thrown in the canal - have so far been reported to police inthe first 10 days of the scheme.

Among them was this incident captured on video by an Ancoats resident which shows a gang ofyouths trying to trash a bike on Redhill  Street on Friday evening.

And while many users have taken to socialmedia to praise the new scheme, there have also been some reports of foul play,including locks being hacked for theft.

The man who captured the Ancoats film, whoasked not to be named, said: “There was a gang of them throwing rocks at it,kicking it, trying to damage it basically.

On Sunday night, James Headisen, 42, formerchairman of the Ancoats Residents' Forum, saw more Mobike vandalism in the samespot.

He said: “Someone had ridden the bike hometo Ancoats youths had picked it up. They were throwing rocks at it.

When the M.E.N met with Mobike boss Chris Martin ahead of thelaunch , he described the bikes as ‘vandalism-proof’, adding:“Mobikes remove that barrier and solve social and economic issues. Why stealsomething available to all? Who would buy it? It’s like buying a bottle ofstolen tap water.”

Despite this, vandals have tried tomindlessly attack and damage the city’s new cycling resource.

Inspector Phil Spurgeon, from Greater Manchester Police ’s City Centreteam, said they had received 17 reports of Mobike criminality since June 29.

Would say that I hope these ferral little urchins are recognised by there parent but think it's a waste of time as most won't know both parents and the one dumped with looking after them will be drunk or drugged somewhere .

We complain that London gets all of the nice things, which makes footage like this all the more frustrating. The same is true for the constant vandalisation of our tram fleet. I've nothing but admiration for our police force but if GMP can't take control of these cretins then it should come as little surprise when investment in nice things goes elsewhere.

No surprise really. To be brutally honest this was expected. To those who moan and groan I will repeat once again Greater Manchester (and the whole country) needs Rodrigo Duterte style justice dished out immediately. Scumbags need to be taught a lesson!
