However, despite the innovative schemebeing well-received by the vast majority of Mancunians, there have been anumber of attempts to break or steal the city’s fleet of new bikes.
Nearly 20 incidents of theft or vandalism -included two being thrown in the canal - have so far been reported to police inthe first 10 days of the scheme.
Among them was this incident captured on video by an Ancoats resident which shows a gang ofyouths trying to trash a bike on Redhill Street on Friday evening.
And while many users have taken to socialmedia to praise the new scheme, there have also been some reports of foul play, including locks being hacked for theft.
The man who captured the Ancoats film, whoasked not to be named, said: “There was a gang of them throwing rocks at it,kicking it, trying to damage it basically.

“Myself and a number of other residentswere shouting at them to stop. One of them shouted back with a racist commentand carried on.
“It’s just pure vandalism. It’s such ashame.”
Police confirmed a report of a Mobike thefton Friday night.
On Sunday night, James Headisen, 42, formerchairman of the Ancoats Residents' Forum, saw more Mobike vandalism in the samespot.
He said: “Someone had ridden the bike hometo Ancoats youths had picked it up. They were throwing rocks at it.
“When I intervened they told me they ‘ownthis neighbourhood’, threatened to throw me in the canal, and then talked aboutgoing to get a knife.
“These kids don’t care - even when theyknow they are being filmed.”
When the M.E.N met with Mobike boss Chris Martin ahead of thelaunch , he described the bikes as ‘vandalism-proof’, adding:“Mobikes remove that barrier and solve social and economic issues. Why stealsomething available to all? Who would buy it? It’s like buying a bottle ofstolen tap water.”
A £49 deposit, a simple mechanism forreporting thefts and damage and anti-vandalism design like airless tyres and nochain are also in the Mobike’s armoury.
Despite this, vandals have tried tomindlessly attack and damage the city’s new cycling resource.
Inspector Phil Spurgeon, from Greater Manchester Police ’s City Centreteam, said they had received 17 reports of Mobike criminality since June 29.
He added: “This includes reports ofabandoned bikes and criminal damage. On two occasions Mobikes were also throwninto the canal.
“We know the majority of people in Manchester have beenusing the bikes respectfully and parking them in designated authorised areas.Sadly, a small minority are not doing this.
“We have been liaising with Mobike, as wellas the council, and we will be meeting with them to discuss any concerns andways we can work together to help reduce the risks of misuse, theft anddamage.”
A spokesman for Mobike said: “Over the pastfortnight, Mancunians and Salfordians have enthusiastically embraced Mobike. Both user and trip growth from the first 1,000 bikes are far beyond ourexpectations, with the bikes in very high circulation.
“We’ve been seeing nine to 10 rides perbike per day. The launch of Mobike in Greater Manchester has been as popular asany of the 100 global cities where we operate.
“While we’ve monitored some issues with aminority of bikes, this has been a tiny number in the context of the scheme’ssuccess and popularity.
“Greater Manchester Police have receivedjust 17 reports related to Mobike issues since launch, from a very high usageof the bikes.
“A number of these reports have beenrelated to suspected - and mistaken - bike abandonment, reported by thoseunfamiliar with Mobike’s innovative dockless sharing system.
“We have received strong support fromGreater Manchester Police, as well as local councils, and will be continuing towork closely with both to ensure our scheme continues to best serve localcommunities and business in Greater Manchester.
“We would like to thank the public fortheir support of Mobike, and encourage them to provide any feedback on thescheme via .”

Would say that I hope these ferral little urchins are recognised by there parent but think it's a waste of time as most won't know both parents and the one dumped with looking after them will be drunk or drugged somewhere .

Can we just taser these kids?

We complain that London gets all of the nice things, which makes footage like this all the more frustrating. The same is true for the constant vandalisation of our tram fleet. I've nothing but admiration for our police force but if GMP can't take control of these cretins then it should come as little surprise when investment in nice things goes elsewhere.
It's such a massive shame

The scheme will be withdrawn within months, other UK cities have tried similar and failed.
We're in Manchester, the ASB capital, who didn't know this would happen !

Why are these young gentlemen not holidaying on the Mediterranean with their families or doing voluntary work in Africa.

Just driven along littleton rd and three scruffy cap heads were on these mobikes,I'll give it a month and they'll all be gone.

Who will now blame police for using tazers on the "kids"?

No surprise really. To be brutally honest this was expected. To those who moan and groan I will repeat once again Greater Manchester (and the whole country) needs Rodrigo Duterte style justice dished out immediately. Scumbags need to be taught a lesson!
