The oldmantra of let the dead rest in peace seems lost on the Indonesian island ofSulawesi.

For everythree years, in a bizarre ritual which dates back hundreds of years, islanderspay respects to deceased relatives by digging them up, cleaning their corpsesand dressing them in their favourite clothes.

It maylook like a scene from a post apocalyptic zombie movie but for the Torajanpeople, an ethnic group indigenous to the mountainous region of Tana Toraja, the Ma'nenefestival is a celebration of life.

I like theidea of being buried with sunglasses. I suspect I'll need them for where I'mheading...

Sad thatthere are so many stupid, predictable comments from the uneducated on this sitewho ridicule the culture of others. This is a remote part of Indonesia andnothing to do with us in the "sophisticated" West. These ceremoniesare carried out with great respect for the dead which is more than you can sayfor the UK in many cases. And they look after their old people. They don'tshove them into care homes.

It's notbizarre to them, just to our society that refuses to discuss death, and hidesit away like a dirty secret. We're the bizarre ones, so frightened of thetruth.

What'sthe truth? We live, we die. It's that simple. All the different practices, cultures, funeral arrangements and festivals around the world are just windowdressing ultimately.

This isdisturbing on so many levels. Not only is it a desecration, but it's verypossible they could pick up diseases from bacteria and pathogens.

How longhave those two guys been trying to put sunglasses on a corpse with no ears?

By ourstandards it's weird. For them it's a normal tradition. It's hard for us tounderstand but can anyone see the love and respect they have for their departedfriends and relatives ? I can....
