The UK risks being marginalised after Brexit if it does not revitalise its infrastructure to engage with the huge markets developing in central Asia. But the UK government’s recent transport investment strategy virtually ignores the greatest infrastructure programme the world has ever seen.

The multi-billion dollar Belt and Road initiative led by China is a plan to create amassive economic zone connecting Asia Europe and Africa through a network of roads ports bridges tunnels and pipelines. The plans which include deep water ports in the Arctic could involve 70 nations and two-thirds of the world’s population.

The initiative was launched in 2013 and so far Europe has been wary of it while UK seems to be ignoring it. However investments lixed to it are happening. Astana the capital of Kazakhstan is investing in a high-tech rail system built by the Chinese who also plan to build a high-speed railway in Thailand by 2021. The Chinese-built high speed railway between Mombasa and Nairobi opened this year and there are plans to extend it further into Africa’s hinterland. And amassive bridge lixing Hong Kong and Macau will open later this year.

There is also huge infrastructure spending in China itself as part of the initiative. By 2020 the country’s highway expressway network will increase from 74000km to 139000km rail lines from 91000km to 120000km and the number of airports from 175 to 240.

China is not the only country investing in transport infrastructure Despite already having a superb transport system Singapore continues to spend 12.5% of the government’s annual income on transport. The equivalent figure for the UK for the next five years is less than 2% and the effects of continued under-investment are evident.

But the Belt and Roads initiative is about much more than transport. The economic centre of gravity of Eurasia is moving eastwards. Singapore is having serious discussions with the Chinese government about how best to engage with it and is supporting its businesses to set up in China.

The UK must follow suit including urgently and massively revitalising its infrastructure so that all parts of the country not just the south-east can engage with these huge markets. So far the UK’s preparations and infrastructure spending plans look hopelessly inadequate.

Move the people out at gun point or simply flood the valley with them still in it? Good luck on that.

The UK ignores China's trillion-dollar Belt and Road plan at its peril The UK will only get involved in such initiatives if it can exploit the players involved. China builds high speed rail and plans to ramp up renewable energy projects in Africa meanwhile all we care about is the extraction of the continents resources and getting our banks to get them into unfathomable amounts of debt. I would love to see Britain at the forefront of the next industrial revolution but perhaps it's better we sit this one out until we change our mindset about the world around us.

so the rest of the UK gets a direct rail lix with Europe There simply isn't the prospect of sufficient passenger numbers to make such services worthwhile unfortunately.

Always the biggest flaw in HS2 in my view. Even if direct trains aren't yet feasible you could at least use the same station...

daveinbrum
HS2 was one of several projects mentioned - the point is that we're in danger of falling behind in infrastructure investment compared to the likes of China.

I'm amazed LAX wasn't on that list. Absolutely dire.

Then why are they building airports? Because some things need to go by air - e.g. perishables self-loading cargo (aka people). I'm not sure anyone builds thousands of miles of roads to help the environment... I'll be honest I don't know much about the Chinese road-building strategy but one thing's for certain: They need more and bigger roads (and they need to be MUCH better policed but that's another story) and they need to spend ?billions on fixing their inner city roads which makes the roller coaster at Alton Towers look like a smooth highway...

Four of the 10 worst airports in the world are in the UK (Gatwick Stansted Manchester and Edinburgh) I beg to differ! I can think of at least 10 airports worse than Manchester

Whereas Japan is mostly highly economically advanced this can only be said of a very small proportion of China either viewed in terms of population or geographic area. Really only the coastal strip and a few inland cities could be described as economically in the top tier. The rest of China badly needs economic development including infrastructure. The Chinese government is increasingly focused on creating internal markets for its goods not just export markets. And if it is to do this more of its population need to have the financial clout to be able to spend their disposable income on consumption. That means infrastructure spending outside the usual areas of the country - highways railways airports. I think this is a significant contrast from Japan which is effectively a massive job creation scheme with little or no wider economic benefit.

I have visions of lorries carrying thousands of those ridiculous fidget spinners across the globe for people to use 5 times then throw away - ugh! Firstly they'll come most of the way by train not lorry. They're coming anyway so is it better that they come most of the way by efficient electric trains or perhaps you'd be happier if they continue to come by ship - ships powered by "bunker oil" a kind of ultra-filthy heavy diesel polluting our oceans etc.

Actually we should be spending it and some of it does do good. But it should not be lixed to self-interest nor used corruptly to enhance multinationals wealth and influence. As I've said above the poorest in the world need vast resources for health sanitation potable water education energy... wealth that of course is concentrated in the hands 8 individual billionaires who have as much wealth as half the world combined...

The British empire turned a third of the chinese into opium addicts. Haha kneel indeed. However mass immigration from third world countries with cultures more religious then scientific and cultures that can't overcome famine has and will lead to the decline of scientific progress not just in this generation but in many generations to come. The chinese will be leading the way in the future if is isn't already.

Drivel. ?Hundreds of millions is going to Coca-Cola and other multinationals to assist them in land seed and energy grabs across Africa and Asia. When I raised this with the LibDem who put the 0.7% in law for foreign aid through parliament he defended it saying Cocoa Cola did good in Africa so deserved the dosh and ditto for other multinationals. Why do you think the Tories supported this? The UK does not give aid out tof the goodness of its heart but to foster world-wide influence and positive economic results for itself. Do some research.
