Hong Kong’s public broadcasting service is set to halt its 24-hour BBC World Service broadcast and replace it with Chinese state programming.

香港公共广播服务将停止播放24小时循环的BBC世界服务广播，取而代之的是中国的官方节目。

The move was intended to “enhance the cultural exchange between the mainland and Hong Kong,” a spokesperson for the broadcaster said.

广播公司的发言人称：这一举措意在“增进大陆和香港之间的文化交流。”

From 4 September, Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) will instead transmit the state-run China National Radio Hong Kong Edition, which features programmes including news in Mandarin.

从9月4日开始，香港无线电视（RTHK）将转而播放中国国家广播电台香港版，包括国语新闻在内的特色节目。

The broadcaster, which is run as a government department, said it was making the change because its Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) service was ending next month.  

这家作为政府部门运作的广播公司称，因为该公司的数字音频广播（DAB）将在下个月停止，所以做出了这一改变。

The government decided in March to halt all digital channels in the city state, saying the fast development of the internet had replaced traditional services.

Hong Kong, a former British colony, became a special administrative region of China in 1997. It has reportedly run a continuous relay of the World Service since 1978.

The city state is governed under the “one country, two systems” principle, which allows it a high level of autonomy.

Yet Beijing can veto changes to the government system, which pro-democracy campaigners claim has hampered progress towards wider suffrage.

Although Hong Kong has a diverse media and freedom of the press is enshrined in the territory's constitution, there are growing concerns about Beijing's influence.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has said more than half of Hong Kong's media owners have roles in Chinese politics, meaning they are reluctant to upset Beijing.

Mass protests against Chinese control of Hong Kong have been held nearly every year since the territory returned to China in 1997.

Hong Kong, despite being "leased" by the UK for 99 years after the British attacked China for not allowing the UK to sell opium to the Chinese people, is and always has been part of China.
Why would it be a surprise that a Chinese city be broadcasting Chinese TV services to the Chinese-speaking population of a Chinese city?

Good for Hong Kong. The British Empire died long ago, and China is the future (like it or not).
Lets hope the BBC and its fawning obsequiance to the UK establishment goes the same way in this rotten country. I'd rather watch Xinhua's coverage of UK politics and the unfolding Brexit disaster than the Tory propaganda channel.

Obviously, most people haven't read the article properly. The BBC will still be heard as the article mentions. I can't see the fuss as HK is after all Chinese speaking.

There is no language called "Chinese". The language most often spoken and also the official language of China is Mandarin - which also happens to be the most spoken language on the entire planet.
You seem to be blind to the history of China, preferring to believe the nonsense that British apologists have long presented as "history" in order to keep the British electorate "on side" in case they want to start up another war, as they did several times in the 20th century.
China is a country with a very long history and a culture that predates Stonehenge. 
Try to put aside the propaganda version of history you have been told - unless you enjoy being no more than "cannon fodder" for your 'betters'.

And, yeah, as Horniman says. There's more than one Chinese language (Pre-simplified, there was only one Chinese written language, but many different spoken versions)
Cantonese and Mandarin are not the same language.
