A strange new species of dinosaur that looked like a 10ft-tall turkey and sported a spectacular head crest has been uncovered in China.

The creature roamed the Earth at the same time as the T-Rex and used its unusual pointed helmet similar to the casque of a cassowary to woo the potential lovers.

Dubbed Corythoraptor jacobsi the flesh eating winged beast is also believed to have had an unusually long flamingo-style neck.

It is believed the crest of Corythoraptor jacobsi which means cassowary-like crest served the same purpose as that of its modern namesake for fighting and sex.

The two-legged animal belongs to a family of feathered dinosaurs called oviraptorosaurs.

These are characterised by their short toothless heads and sharp beaks.

They ranged from turkey sized around 39 to 49 inches (100 to 125 cm) in length to almost 25 feet (eight metres) long.

Others also had crests of bone on their head.

Fossil discoveries in recent decades suggest the group was experiencing a population boom diversifying into new species for around 15 million years.

But an asteroid which slammed into the coast of Mexico wiped out all the non-bird dinosaurs.

An international team of researchers has studied the remains of the creature which were unearthed at a construction site in Ganzhou southern China.
The almost complete skeleton which includes its skull and jaw revealed that it lived during the Late Cretaceous between 100 and 66 million years ago and was at least eight years old when it died in early adulthood.

The bird-like dinosaurs had huge razor-sharp claws and a stout but powerful toothless beak that ripped smaller animals apart.

Looking like a giant turkey on stilts it stood about ten feet (three metres) tall on its hind legs and weighed about 37 stone (230kg).

But its most striking feature was the pointed helmet similar to the crest or 'casque' on the head of the cassowary a flightless Australian bird related to emus and ostriches.

It is believed the crest of Corythoraptor jacobsi which means cassowary-like crest served the same purpose as that of its modern namesake for fighting and sex.

Crests on male dinosaurs were more decorative.

They were used to intimidate rivals and as an expression of fitness to attract mates.

Dinosaur means terrible lizard. This is a bird. More like an ostrich.

Liam Xaoh -> morph gull
The word dinosaur really does not mean ?terrible-lizard.? Actually it was originally defined to mean ?fearfully-great lizard? by Richard Owen in 1842. The Greek word deinos when used as a superlative means ?fearfully-great? as used by Homer in The Iliad. It became simplified over time as an adjective to mean ?terrible.? In reality scientists believe that dinosaurs are neither ?terrible? nor ?lizards!?
