Almost one million EU citizens working in the UK, many of whom are highly qualified, are planning to either leave the country or have already decided to do so following Brexit, a new study has found.

The international survey, which sampled 2,000 EU citizens working in the UK and 1,000 EU citizens from the ten countries most likely to supply EU labour, also found that 50 per cent of people felt less welcome since the referendum.

The research also discovered that 55 per cent of those with PhDs and 49 per cent of those with postgraduate degrees had either decided to leave or were considering it.

Karen Briggs, Head of Brexit at KPMG, who conducted the research, said: “Our survey highlights how important the actions of employers are going to be if the UK is to avoid a Brexit brain-drain.  Although almost half of the EU citizens working in the UK plan to stay, what other EU citizens choose to do is definitely hanging in the balance.

“Against this backdrop we expect to see increased competition for talent between employers over the coming years, and numerous firms seeking to supplement their workforce with AI, robotics and automation.”

Punam Birly, Head of Employment & Immigration at KPMG, said the survey indicated too few employers were doing enough to support their EU employees, which was making the UK vulnerable.

Ms Birly said: “Compounding this issue we're seeing a reduction in applications from EU citizens to UK universities.  This could create a high-end talent pipeline problem – and a shortage of chemists, linguists, and other budding professionals.

“At the very top end of the graduate market, those who are most sought after, and thus most highly rewarded, will be the biggest issue for employers.”

I wonder why immigration is so high then? Non-EU immigrants have to prove they can support themselves, and we get plenty of them. Maybe it's just the EU immigrants that rely on taxpayer top-ups that are not so keen to come now?

Where do you get your information from?  I suggest you find another source.  EU migrants are not entitled to any state support.  They must show they are self sufficient.  They must find employment within 90 days, or continue to show they are self sufficient.  If employment is obtained, they pay the same contributions as everyone else in Tax and NI.  However they remain blocked from State support (benefits) for 180 days, and the Health Service for 90 days.  If they have an employment based contribution gap of more than 90 days, then their status is 'reset' to the beginning.   This is far more strict than for non-EU migrants.

I always thought Flamingos hadn't much brainpower, now it's confirmed. EU immigrants are NETTO payers, not receivers in the welfare kitty unlike immigrants from outside the EU (showing government "proving" methods not very efficient). Immigration is so high because May insists on including students who we now know leave (97%) the UK after their education.

As a major interlectual figure of the contempry Britsih Left I fully support the fourth reich.I was born on the roughest concil estate ever in da histry of da world and my mum worked 12 hour shifts in da local chip shop just to put coca cola on da table!I failed my 11+ becuz of da torees init, but I went on to some real acamedic achievements.

I have:
* Four University degrees
* Seventeen A ls
* The Nobel prize for p0rnography
* GCSE in woodwork

17门A

So listen 2 me when I tell you that we gotta stay in da EU.Stuff the British working class, they are too stupid to be allowed to vote.Vote Labour and overturn the referendum by the back door.

Vote labour and you can have segregation for women on trains instead of dealing with the problem of sexual harassment  and hammer the hard working tax payer when they bump up the taxes.

Congratulations. One of the stupidest posts I have seen at the Indy. Confirms my opinion that quitters don't have too much "up top".

Reich is German for 'Rule', and relates to a change in a governmental system.  Germany is now in its fifth such change, and the UK in its third.

Based on my experience in a PhD rich industry, I would say this is an underestimate. The younger PhDs want to go and can go.  They are mobile and want a career that has a future in a country that is supportive. The older ones, with families, think twice (especially if they have UK spouses) but then decide to give their children a future in the EU.Add to that the xenophobia they get on the streets and on public transport and you have all the makings of a HUGE brain drain.

So you only know PhD holders who are racist and xenophobic then? Fully 94% of all the cleverest people in the world live OUTSIDE the EU. Most of the world is outside the EU. Progressive PhD holders - like me - seek opportunities anywhere in the world. The UK has the second highest number of top research universities of any country in the world - the rest of the EU has none in the top 20. Not a single one.

Ever listen to the likes of the awful Priti Patel sting we only want the best and brightest. Seems the best and brightest don't want us anymore.

Indeed.  What is to attract them to come and/or stay?
EU brain recruitment is down as well.

Does that mean then that British people are not the brightest anymore and we have to import talent ? I don't believe for 1 second that is true, what I don believe is most are working   In retail and restaurants as they can't get a job in the field they had studied in. If papers like this continuously send out propaganda messages that only people from the rest of the EU are employable then guess what companies start to believe it and only hire people with a foreign name. Pity as our 'talented' kids are overlooked.

This has been happening for decades especially amongst medical staff. My daughters did it after becoming docs they eventually return, threatening to leave and actually leaving are two different  things. If it's a hard Brexit will there be jobs for them to go to in the wonderfull eu especially if we take our custom elsewhere

Of course there will be jobs in the EU, especially for medical staff, because the EU has decreased the ratio of number of doctors per patient and all EU states are now scrambling for medical staff.

That works both ways!
Is it okay for the UK to poach trained staff from countries that have trained them and need them for themselves?
Often poorer coutries than the UK that are trying to develop.

Trained Doctors come to the UK and give the NHS many years of service at low pay and difficult working conditions, so they are at liberty to leave when they choose, they are not slaves to the system.
