Theresa May today furiously denied reports she questioned Britain's role as a top tier military power in private talks with her Defence Secretary and military chiefs.

Defence spending is set to rise dramatically up the agenda with a looming Nato summit and Donald Trump's first visit to Britain as Prime Minister.

But Mrs May's official spokesman told reporters: 'We are a leading military power and the PM is committed to ensuring that remains the case.

I don't believe the U.K requires a particularly powerful army. As an island country I expect a much stronger navy and air force as per the past. However our Navy is bare bones at the moment and it's all down to procurement failures. It's not that we don't have enough money. We have the 6th/7th largest military budget on the planet. It's that it's been wasted in TERRIBLE decisions by the admiralty and governments the past 20 years. We always pay too much for equipment and bungle the decisions that end up costing even more years down the line to fix.

Well we don't need to be the most powerful but we need to be among the best. Most of the military powers were being stripped by our previous Europhilic politicians anyway we prematurely retired our carriers and harriers jets so that in case of emergency we have to rely on the one and only Charles de Gaulle carrier. What a joke! You are absolutely correct that so much money was wasted simply because of bad decisions and managements. The best way to save the budget is to slimline all those bureaucratic systems.

The Tories hate the Armed Forces they have cut manning to a 200 year low. They privatised recruitment at a cost of millions which now fails.
