Ambitious plans to create a high-speed 'flying train' in China have been unveiled - but experts have voiced their skepticism.
The idea has been put forward by The China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, which says the trains will have a top speed of 2,500mph - three times the speed of sound.
Under the plans, the South China Morning Post reports, capsules will fly along reduced-pressure tubes.
Professor Zhao Jian, from the Beijing Transport University, told the publication that the human body would only be able to cope with the speeds for a short time, and said: 'In that case, are the passengers going to be astronauts only?'
And one Weibo user, quoted by the South China Morning Post, joked: 'Can the government please invent technology to solve traffic jams first? It takes me an hour to drive from the fifth to the third ring road.'
In an editorial piece in state-owned newspaper The Paper, the company behind the plans wrote: 'The corporation has built rich experience and accumulated technological know-how through major projects, and it has the capabilities in simulation, modelling and experimentation for large-scale projects, as well as the world-class design capability for supersonic aircraft, all of which lay the important ground for the super-fast train project.'
The trains are set to rival the Hyperloop concept put forward by Elon Musk, which would see trains without wheels propelled by air, and is mooted to have a top speed of 700mph.

So none of the SR71 Blackbird pilots survived travelling at Mach 3? It's not the speed, it's the acceleration and braking that hurt...

Artificial gravity can resolve this. However, that area of tech is way under funded and likely hundreds of years of..

Woolva, There is no trick to gravity. The only way to "artificially" effect it is by putting mass together. If there is very little mass the effect of gravity will be weak. There is no way around this. Unless you want to be traveling on a spaceship the size of a small moon you are out of luck.

China already has but from scratch in he past 15 years 30,000 kilometres of high speed rail track and three versions of high speed train and the lasses model are operating at 450 kilometres per hour. They are state of the art and wold class. As are the booking system and the rail stations. Many integrated with bus, taxi, subway and airport. And in places like Australia they cannot even build a decent anything anymore as they destroy their power systems and wast 60 billion on failed green energy projects and the most expensive power in the world. You need vision ability and liveability and leading edge scientists to achieve such systems and China has it all in less than 50 years.

You'll be able to get from Beijing to Shanghai in 20 minutes, but unfortunately the train takes three hours to slow down... by which time you'll be in Hong Kong. Some 2 hours later, your liver will probably catch up with you.

Going from 0 to 2200 mph would take 33 minutes at 0.5g accelleration, then you would need equal time to decellerate. Just to give some idea of realistic time and accellleration forces to achieve the speeds.
HornblowerRN
66 miles/sec acceleration, sounds like 33 minutes of pure fun!

miles/minute, whoops!

Accelleration is meters/second/second miles/sec is a velocity.

Chris - I think it's 3.3 minutes, not 33?

The experts criticising are no experts. The human body cannot sense speed only acceleration and G force. At 2500 mph you would only sense speed if there is a window but you wouldn't feel it.

It is lovely to see SOMEONE get it! You are absolutely correct! The train would travel at 2500mph, but the passenger relative to the train would travel at 0mph, unless they move about. If the "experts" were correct, how would someone in a SR71 at 2200mph or even the ISS crew at 17150 mph not get creamed? The "experts" needs to go back to preschool on this one.

Phew - glad to see there are still some of us with a brain - the speed isn't the issue - it's the acceleration and deceleration but even then - with today's technology and given enough to time to accelerate and decelerate safely, this shouldn't be a problem.

The video used 2000 KPH which DM converted to 2500 MPH. I give up

That is true Chris, the speed of the train/plain/space station doesn't matter really. The passenger on board doesn't move, the train does -)

i think they said something similar with train travel ie you cant breathe above 25mph. bring it on i say. the sooner the better.

Yes you beat me to it! I remember reading that when the first trains were invented people were convinced they would not be able to survive the 'speed!.'

".........but experts fear the human body can't cope with moving that fast" ...... In the same way humans couldn't cope with the speed of the first trains? The experts of the day said much the same thing!

All a load of rubbish just like interstellar space travel. Why isn't Concorde still flying you have to ask, and the answer is that just one crash with a load of VIP's on board is all it takes to cancel the enterprise.

What a horrible comment to make. So if they are rich they don't have a right to live? What an anti-progressive point of view. I would find it hard to imagine those living in absolute squalid conditions in other countries would be wishing the same on us.
