North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has warned that Tuesday’s missile launch over Japan was a “meaningful prelude to containing” the US Pacific territory of Guam adding that his regime would conduct more ballistic missile tests.

I hope that is satire this is a man who murdered his own half brother and uncle and has cleaned house of anyone who is not loyal to him. Trump may be an ass hole but at least he only fires people who disagree with him. As bad as Trump may be he doesn't go around murdering opponents and family members.

Bad news. NK and its thinly-disguised ally China want to remove the US military presence form the entire South China Sea area.
So Kim’s action are not arbitrary or impulsive mad or stupid. Rather they are strategically studied rational and clever. What we are seeing are controlled provocations for precise purposes which now go beyond just a show of strength.
Regrettably I do not believe that sanctions will provide a solution here. NK is thought to be reliant on China for 90 percent of imports. Toughening sanction would make sense only if China actually fully implemented the UNSC sanctions it has repeatedly voted in favour of while cynically ignoring them in practice.

朝鲜领导人金正恩警告说，周二在日本上空发射导弹是对美国太平洋关岛地区“有意义的遏制前奏”，并补充说，在他的政权下朝鲜将进行更多的弹道导弹试验。

I agree. Except China has also been absorbing huge numbers of N. Korean immigrants so they are kind of joined at the hip too. They have their own little boy to deal with as much as we do... The only question is are they steering the little boy to wreck the neighbour's house or are they wanting to muzzle him...

China wants to be seen to be trying to muzzle Kim but that’s just for show. There is much strategy and deceit here.
Anyone who wants to find out more about that should read Art of War by Xi’s favourite philosopher and guiding mentor Sun Tzu the Chinese Machiavelli over 1000 years before Machiavelli. It’s a very short book but very instructive and I hope Trump’s strategists have read and studied it carefully. Knowing the mind of your adversary is fundamental.

The end game for this is the end of NK and unification of Korea with the US military on the border with China. That's the end game if China doesn't do anything to stop Kim Jong-crazy from this mad path. The problem is China can't figure out how to keep the status quo which is what they want to do because it's the best thing they have going. I've long thought that solution is China takes Kim out. But good luck getting China to see it that way. But maybe they have someone in North Korea in deep cover who can remove Kim and replace him with a look-alike. I'd suggest that Psy guy he hasn't have any hits recently so he'd probably be up for doing it. I don't know about you but I can't wait for the video of Kim Jong-psy's Pyongyang Style.

North Korea and the Kim regime is China's trump card. They have been using it to check the west without bringing much if anything to the table to stop them. Sanctions have never worked and they never will because China still does tons of business with NK. I have been saying for 30 years that when China becomes the big boy on the block they will remove their mask and show the world who they truly are. I predicted another Japanese style Asian takeover many years ago and voila China now builds military bases is long disputed waters on man-made islands to top it all off. China has been very subtle about it over the years amassing military and economic clout to tango with the west. China has hated the west for hundreds of years and the world was very stupid to believe that would change. I am now 56 and will not live to see the day China's master plan succeeds. However my children your children and their children will be.

Sanctions don't really work because it's not the Kim family or the generals that suffer when they are implemented. It's the peasants in the field that are given the honor of starving to death for the dear leader. Moreover pretty well everything that can be sanctioned already has been. New UN resolutions are supposed to reduce North Korean exports from 3 billion dollars to 2. To show how tiny that is well over a billion dollars of trade passes between Canada and the US every single day.

If you believe that will not hang over the world like a dark cloud a nuclear armed North Korea I feel very sorry for your descendants and mine. People say that Kim is not stupid and he has a plan. It is not his plan it is China's and when China starts taking over Asia with its military instead of its economy I will not be around to say "I told you so". I will be dead.

He's not a lunatic he's just got no other choices and frankly he's playing this game better than anyone else. He's still in power he's not going anywhere and he seems to know exactly how much to push everyone's buttons to get what he wants without going to far.
I live in Japan; I'm absolutely terrified; but it doesn't help to think of him as a lunatic. He's just doing what he has to to stay alive and I can't see him failing in his ultimate obxtive - stick around.
He knows war spells the end and he won't go there.

Not sure Myanmar is a great example for him. Isn't the military grip being gradually eroded? Not sure he'd be that happy about handing any kind of power over to North Korea's version of An San Suu Kyi. What's the point for him? Better off to just hang in there and fire off a few whizzbangs when the world starts to forget how powerless it is to do anything.
He's only got to look at Gaddafi for an example of a despot who gave up weapons only to be toppled in a number of years.

Just take a look at the number of US bases that are encircling China and you will realise they are using NK as a buffer to US control of the whole south Asian peninsula. Its also the reason they are building military bases on newly built islands in the south China sea.
Its exactly what the Russians did with Ukraine. They see more and more US bases on their doorstep and respond.
These are direct responses to US efforts at worldwide military hegemony. The way to solve these issues is for the US to stop trying to control everything and stop this idiotic and psychotic idea that the US is a beacon of democracy. It isn't. It never has been. It's just a bully which invades and takes over countries to 'impose democracy' which is short hand for opening up the countries internal economic markets for US and it's global financial elite to exploit.
