The US government has said it will not bringcharges against the police officers involved in the death of Freddie Gray - thelatest set-back for the family of the young black man who died while in thecustody of Baltimore police two years ago.

The US Department of Justice told a lawyer forthe family of the 25-year-old, that a decision had been naken not to bringfederal charges against the six officers who detained Mr Gray in April 2015.

Mr Gray suffered a devastating spinal injury anddied about a week after he was arrested and placed into a prisoner van.

Six officers were charged by local prosecutorsafter it emerged that his neck had been broken while being transported in theback of a Baltimore Police Department vehicle.

Yet all six were cleared or else the chargesagainst them were dropped, including officer Caesar Goodson, who had beendriving the vehicle in which Mr Gray was being transported without beingproperly restrained.

Three officers were acquitted at trial.Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby dropped the remaining state cases.

The Associated Press said the Gray family’s lawyer, Billy Murphy, said the Justice Department informed him onTuesday that no charges would be filed.

Five officers face internal disciplinary trials, and these are scheduled to begin on October 30. The news was first reported bythe Baltimore Sun.

Those officers are Lt Brian Rice, Sgt AliciaWhite and officers Caesar Goodson, Edward Nero and Garrett Miller. The sixthofficer, William Porter, was not charged administratively.

The death of Mr Gray, one of a series of blacksuspects to die at the hands of police, touched off weeks of protests andunrest in Baltimore. Most of the protests were peaceful but some turnedviolent.

Last year, the Justice Department released areport detailing widespread patterns of abuse and misconduct within theBaltimore Police Department.

In September 2015,Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced the city had reached a $6.4msettlement with Mr Gray’s family. She said said the settlement “should not be interpreted as a judgment on the guilt or innocence ofthe officers facing trial”.

As predicted, the charges were politicallymotivated by the black Mayor & DA and the fact that the 6 cops were black,Hispanic and white showed there was no racism involved. There was no proof ofintent there, so it was pretty certain it wouldn't stand up to scrutiny. Ipredict the case in Charlotteville will also fail on murder charges with thatcar driver and it will be reduced to manslaughter. Anyone want to take bets ?

Anyone with medical knowledge should know thatnecks can be broken and spinal damage incurred spontaneously.

Especially whilst in police custody.

Prisoner custody and prisoner transport (whetherpolice or military) are the schijt end of the stick. You want that job?Especially with a prisoner like the late, unlamented Freddie Gray. Mostprisoners behave like human beings but some don't, Freddie being an example ofthe don't. Those accused of mistreating him were acquitted and under the USConstitution can't be tried again.

Poor Freddie Gray, career criminal andall-around neighborhood nuisance. Missed by nobody except his fellowtroublemakers. Anyway, even if his death was unjustified (it wasn't) there's nofederal crime. Didn't take place on federal property or involve a federalemployee. The City of Baltimore, Maryland (not part of any county, theequivalent of a unitary authority in UK) had jurisdiction and all accused wereacquitted. Aside from lack of federal jurisdiction, US Constitution prohibitsdouble jeopardy for those acquitted of a crime. There is no exception forfiling charges in another jurisdiction or calling the same charges somethingelse. Thankfully Trump is president so constitutional government is beingrestored in USA. If Clinton had won the election, the police officers wouldhave been charged in violation of the Constitution.

Its about time the US took the bull by the hornsabout race and give blacks their own autonomous region. They could then raisetheir own taxes have separate police and judiciaries. The two groups will neverlive together and are heading for a clash of some sort. The US could subsidise it for lets say 30 years on a sliding scale helping fund projects within that time then give it full independenceif they so wish. This removes the constant blaming of white people from dragging down the US and gives black people a start in which they canmake their own destiny.
