Workers on a cruise ship in China had to hold back a woman who tried to jump into a deep lake to save her mobile phone this week.

The female passenger surnamed Liu had accidentally dropped her handset which contained 'important documents' into the Erhai Lake a popular scenic spot in Yunnan Province.

这名刘姓女乘客不小心将存有“重要文件”的手机掉进了洱海——一个位于云南省的非常受欢迎的风景区。

A viral video shows workers dragging her from the edge of the ship and trying to comfort the woman.

在一段广为流传的视频中显示，工作人员正把她从船边拽回来，并试图安慰她。

According to account associated with the video Ms Liu was touring Erhai with two companions on the afternoon of October 14 reported news website Sohu.

搜狐新闻网报道，根据与视频相关的账户显示，刘女士于10月14日下午和两名同伴一起在洱海游玩。

The report quoted an eyewitness who claimed that Ms Liu was extremely emotional and was shouting that she wanted to jump off the ship to save her phone.

该报道援引一位目击者的言论称，刘女士当时极度激动，并大叫着要跳下船去抢救她的手机。

Her attempt was stopped by the workers on the ship.

The eyewitness reportedly said: 'The staff at the cruise ship company and the scenic spot had already tried to find the phone for her.'

They apparently failed to find the gadget and the woman said she wanted to try by herself.

Dali Tourism Group the management company of the cruise ship has confirmed the authenticity of the video. 

大理旅游集团——这艘游轮所属的管理公司已经证实了这段视频的真实性。

In a statement the company said Ms Liu had been taking pictures with her phone on the fourth deck. The phone fell into water by accident.

The company also claimed that after its staff dragged Ms Liu to safety they arranged a boat to send her back to the shore so she could calm down.

The statement also said that after a few attempts the company failed to find the phone as the lake is around seven metres deep (23 feet) and has a lot of water weeds.

Last year we were on a tour of some wetlands in Australia when a woman dropped her phone into the water. She almost jumped in. She hadn't backed up any of her photos from the past month and she lost all her contacts. If htere is something so important on your phone back it up or you could end up in this situation. Putting others lives at risk because you dropped your phone isn't okay.
