'If they continue to have nuclear weapons, nuclear weapons must spread in the rest of Asia', Henry Kissinger warns

South Korea and Japan are considering whether they should build their own nuclear arsenals to counter the threat from North Korea, Henry Kissinger has said.

The former US national security adviser said he had little doubt nuclear weapons would spread across Asia as a result of the North's missile and nuclear programmes.

US Defence Secretary James Mattis has warned the threat of a nuclear missile attack by North Korea is accelerating, and said Donald Trump's administration would never accept a nuclear North Korea.

But Mr Kissinger, a Cold War nuclear strategist, told the New York Times: "If they [North Korea] continue to have nuclear weapons, nuclear weapons must spread in the rest of Asia."

North Korean official Ri Yong Pil tells CNN the possibility of a nuclear threat from North Korea should be taken 'literally'

He added: “It cannot be that North Korea is the only Korean country in the world that has nuclear weapons, without the South Koreans trying to match it. Nor can it be that Japan will sit there.

“So therefore we’re talking about nuclear proliferation.”

The South and Japan fear Donald Trump's administration might hesitate to defend its allies if doing so might provoke a nuclear attack on the United States, the paper reported.

In South Korea, around 60 per cent of the population is in favour of building nuclear weapons.

Japan's Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, who won a two-thirds majority in parliament, hopes to overturn Japan's post-war constitution in order to build up military forces against the potential threat from the North.

While public support for nuclear arms in Japan is low, that could change if both North and South Korea had arsenals.

General Mattis sought to reassure US allies in the region by saying North Korea is outmatched by the firepower and cohesiveness of the decades-old US-South Korean alliance.

"North Korea has accelerated the threat that it poses to its neighbours and the world through its illegal and unnecessary missile and nuclear weapons programs," he said, adding that US-South Korean military and diplomatic collaboration thus has taken on "a new urgency."

He said diplomacy remains the preferred way to deal with the North, but added: "Make no mistake — any attack on the United States or our allies will be defeated, and any use of nuclear weapons by the North will be met with a massive military response that is effective and overwhelming."

“War will end when humanity realizes that its borders to space are unguarded and that its resources here on Earth are becoming dangerously depleted. It will take all nations to bond together to protect the world from intervention from the outside and from collapse on the inside. In this, there is only one choice, for the alternative is too terrible to contemplate.” – Marshall Vian Summers

Vian Summers

Is Kissinger EVER going to do the world a favour and just fking DIE?

one could not blame them...with a loony neighbour in their close area...!

No, Japan and South Korea are not "considering" getting nuclear weapons. Both have already agreed to become nuclear armed states. Trump insisted that they do so and he has offered to supply nuclear weapons and delivery systems cheaper than they can build them.

Which nuclear systems have they offered?  They have no missiles (Trident would be ill-suited to striking a target less than 1,000km away) which only leaves the B-61 bomb.
Both countries have ballistic missiles, although Japan's is ostensibly a space launch vehicle, both have stocks of fissile material and the knowledge needed to build a bomb isn't hard to master.
They'll do it their own way if at all, that also admonishes the United States from the responsibility of proliferating nukes and putting nukes on the borders of Russia and China.

The headline seems to be quoting the article’s author, not Henry Kissinger or any credible source within South Korea or Japan. It’s time to rehire a few of those journalists, I think.

Perhaps it's de best way to send US of A out of Asia. Once Japan n SK obtained this, who needs America protection, and u can be rest assured that the region will be at peace. The earlier they do the better.

"South Korea and Japan 'considering obtaining nuclear weapons'"
What a coincidence!  I'm thinking of obtaining nuclear weapons myself.  I've got *quite* a big garden, and actually it could be quite a talking point if I had an ICBM in the bottom-righthand corner, ready to launch at a moment's notice.
It'd have to be an H-bomb of course: Mr Perkins at No. 33 has a 20 kiloton device.  Mine would have to be a 20 megaton "big boy" at the very least.

Kissinger. Enough said.

With respect, Sir, No.  Not enough said.

"Kissinger" is not even a grammatically parsable sentence.

“Kissinger”

There's even some in South Africa who want to reactive their nuclear weapons program.

The MAD Mutually Assured Destruction ethos of the cold war stand off clearly is not going to work with North Korea as NK knows it will be decimated by conventional and / or nuclear weapons the minute it fires a live round.
Japan and South Korea sparking a nuclear arms race increases the chances of a nuclear war in the region.
America is bankrupt and can only survive in a state of perpetual war generated by the military industrial complex and controlling world trade. The sun is setting on the American Empire and rising in the far East.
