TheBritish public have delivered a damning verdict on the Government’s Brexitstrategy after a new poll revealed a huge majority think negotiations withBrussels are going badly.

在一份最新民调显示绝大多数受访者认为与布鲁塞尔的谈判进展不顺利之后，英国民众对政府的脱欧策略表达了强烈不满。

Theexclusive BMG Research survey carried out before andduring the European Council summit at which the Prime Minister won asmall concession from EU leaders, shows more than three-quarters ofpeople still think her strategy is failing.

Almost half also think that the no-deal scenario threatened byministers would be “bad” for Britain, and rejectoutright the hard Brexitplan to abandon talks at Christmas if the EU does not allowprogress, according to the poll.

Thepolling undertaken between 17 and 20 October comes after a toughEuropean Council meeting at which Theresa May herself admitted talkshad hit “difficulty”, as she beseeched European leaders to give her a deal shecould sell to the British public.

The survey asked, “In your view, how well or badly do youfeel the negotiations are going?” Seventy-six per cent said they felt they aregoing either “quite badly” or “very badly”.

Only 1 per cent thought they are going “very well”, with a further 11 per centthinking they are going quite well and 12 per cent saying “don’t know”.

Ms May has said she does not want the negotiations to collapse, but hasconsistently threatened to walk away from talks if she does not get what shewants, coining the phrase in her Lancaster House speech “no deal is better thana bad deal”.

The survey suggests almost half of people, some 46 per cent, believe a deal iseither “fairly” or “very” unlikely, with 37 per cent believing the opposite and17 per cent saying they “don’t know”.

Meanwhile, 45 per cent, think a no-deal scenario would be bad for Britain, only11 per cent think it would be good, while 22 per cent say it would make “nodifference”.

EU leaders shone a ray of hope on to negotiations on Friday by confirmingpreviously reported plans that they will begin internal discussions onpreparing for trade talks, which might potentially start by Christmas.

But the BMG survey showed a majority of the British public rejected thisapproach – with 52 per cent saying the UK should continue trying to achieve adeal regardless, 28 per cent saying the country should abandon talks andaccelerate plans for a “no deal” and 20 per cent saying they did not know.

Some 48 per cent say the EU will come off better, while only a fifth, 21 percent, think the UK will come out on top. People who did not know accounted for31 per cent of those surveyed.

Merkel: Brexit progress ‘not sufficient’ so far

Speaking after the summit on Friday, Ms May gave an upbeat assessment of thestate of play, saying: “I’m positive and optimistic about where we can get toin relation to the future partnership that we want with the EU, because it isnot only in the interests of the British people, it is in the interests ofpeople across the remaining 27 members of the EU as well.”

The Prime Minister said Britain will be ready to pay “relevant costs” ofcontinued participation in EU projects, but made clear an overall figure cannotbe expected before the shape of the final deal is known – something notexpected before autumn 2018.
