At dawn on Wednesday an army of 1.7 million foot soldiers and 400,000 vehicles will fan out across towns and cities in China. Its mission? To begin delivering 760m parcels expected to be ordered during a 24-hour orgy of spending that is described as the world’s greatest online shopping fiesta.

Singles’ Day – or Double Eleven, as most Chinese call it in reference to the day on which it falls – was reputedly started on 11 November 1993 by singleton students who were seeking an excuse to buy themselves presents.

How can double eleven days be bad? The Chinese economy, we are told, need rebalancing or in other words the Chinese middle class need to get spending at home, not at Harrods. And that old commie dictator is turning in his mausoleum as a bonus.

Alibaba: Online Chinese retailer sells $7 billion of merchandise in first 90 minutes of Singles Day sales.
Wow!

Is China playing a blinder.

It is centrally planned, which allows big picture, strategic thinking.

The West relies on competition to maximise profit for individual players, with no mechanisms for big picture thinking and strategic, long term planning. It’s markets have moved to high frequency trading to make a second a long term investment.

After 2008, China noted that it had all the surpluses, while the West was drowning in debt and if there were any big debt write downs, it would effectively miss out. Western debt would be written off giving them a free lunch.

China started building up its debt but engaged in useful investment in infrastructure while the West carried on inflating the prices of stuff that exists already, houses, stocks, fine art ..... etc .....

China is now ready for the debt write downs when the world recognises it can’t handle its debt.

China still has scope to lower interest rates to make its debt more affordable, in the West that luxury disappeared seven years ago.

In the West, the inflated prices of assets that already exist will go down to their pre-bubble levels.

China will have its infrastructure and empty cities ready for the future.

Not celebrating, sweetie - just reporting on this social phenomenon. I'm in China and i learned yesterday that the shopping online started at midnight on the 11th. Millions of people stayed up into the wee hours to shop online before the websites might crash or all the goodies would sell out.

Street shops are still there. They just sell other stuff not appropriate for online sales.

Good luck with that...but it's not people that need to buy filters, its your factories that need to filter their pollutants, and clean transport systems in cities as an alternative to so many cars...

The air in Beijing is so polluted that breathing it does as much damage to the lungs as smoking 40 cigarettes a day, says a new study.

The report said air pollution in China kills about 4,000 people every day, about 17 percent of all deaths in China, but noted that connecting mortality to pollution is "complicated."

if the above stats are true, you have an extremely serious problem that is likely only to get worse...hope i'm wrong about that...

This particular quote does not necessarily reflect Marx's thinking. It is drawn from an experimental work (The Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts) which was never intended to be published. More significantly the mature Marx contradicted this line of reasoning as he seriously got into economic theory. Indeed for the later Marx the very point of capitalism is to drive our productive capabilities, with the market playing a key role in determining the direction of our advances. Anyway who thinks that they have the right to decide on the correctness of other people's desires, unless they believe that they are God?
