A 1,400-year-old tree has become the centreof attention in the city of Xi’an, central China’s Shaanxi Province.

一棵1400年的古树成为了西安市的焦点。

Stunning photos taken recently of theginkgo tree - also known as the maidenhair tree – were released on the People’sDaily Online, showing its majestic sea of golden leaves.

照片上是最近拍摄的一棵银杏树（又叫孔雀草树），这些照片被发布在了人民日报网站上，展示了其宏伟的金色叶海。



According to the report it’s said to havebeen planted during the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907), and people have beentravelling from all over China to visit the spectacular site.

据报道，这棵树植于唐朝（618-907），来自全中国的游客都来观看这个壮观的景象。

The tree is situated in the Zen BuddhistTemple in Luohandong village in the city of Xi'an.

这棵树位于西安市罗汉洞村的禅宗佛教寺庙。



According to legend surrounding thisspecific ginkgo tree, it was planted for Emperor Li Shimin. He was the foundingfather of the Tang Dynasty, ruling from 629 to 649.

根据传说，这是为皇帝李世民种植的。他是唐朝的国父，629到649年间在位。

The maidenhair or ginkgo tree is describedas a 'living fossil.' It is the sole survivor of an ancient group of trees thatis said to be older than dinosaurs.

银杏树被称为“活化石”。这是古代树木中唯一幸存下来的，据说比恐龙还要古老。



With fan shaped leaves, it's a largedeciduous tree that will be completely bare and leafless in the heart ofwinter.

其叶子是扇形的，这种巨大的阔叶树在深冬时节完全光秃秃，叶子全掉光。

In the summer, the female trees growunpleasantly scented yellow fruits containing two single large seeds.

夏季的时候，这种雌性树木会生长出味道不好闻的黄色果实，里面含有两个大大的种子。



Ginkgo trees are native to China.

I have one too (it's about 15 years old),bought in Weimar, Germany, where it's the emblem. There's a majestic one there,that lived at the same time as Mozart. Pretty young compared with this Chineseone. Amazingly beautiful. This autumn, mine's leaves carpeted the hedge next toit, gorgeous. But now looking at this, I wonder what have I done ??? to plantsuch a tree in a medium garden, albeit surrounded by fields. Ah well, I won'tlive long enough to see its effect ... or the later reaction to its size!!!...

I planted a gingko in NZ - the foliage isstunning - though not like the example here. They are not terribly expensineeither. Imagine if that tree could speak - 1400 years!

Actually, I was thinking that it's greatthat the tree seems to be protected, otherwise some idiot human would damage orkill it. It's been known to happen to very old trees.

The ginkgo is a remarkable tree, not leastbecause of its incredible resistance.....there was a ginkgo tree more or lessat the centre of the atomic blast that destroyed Hiroshima in 1945 and itsurvives to this day. Also, the leaves contain active ingredients that are verybeneficial for improving blood flow, especially in the brain. They are indeednative to China, but you can see them in many other countries if you keep youreyes open. Beautiful....

银杏树是一种神奇的树木，尤其是它具有神奇的抵抗力。。。1945年广岛发生原子弹爆炸时，或多或少在市中心的地方有一棵银杏树，可是这棵银杏树一直生存到今天。还有，其叶子的活性成分非常有利于提高血流，特别是大脑的血流。确实原产于中国，但是如果你仔细看的话，很多其他国家也能看到银杏树。漂亮。。。。
