His Little Red Book sparked consternationwhen Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell brandished it in the Commons last week.

Now Chinese Communist Party leader MaoZedong's links to the Labour Party can be traced all the way back to before theSecond World War.

In 1937, he wrote to Clement Atlee askingfor support for Chinafollowing the invasion of the country by Japan.

The letter, which is expected to fetch upto ￡150,000 at an auction, was written before Mao seized power in China,leading to the deaths of millions, and before Mr Atlee became Labour's secondPrime Minister.

Signed by Mao, it is one of the very firstcommunications between the Communist leader and any Western politician.

Written from Yan'an, a remote part of north-western China where the Communists had setup headquarters following the full-scale Japanese invasion of the country, itcalls for urgent assistance from the British in the war against Japaneseimperialism.

After stating his solidarity and goodwilltowards the British people, Mao said: 'We would ask you especially to lend thesupport of your Party to any measures of practical assistance to China that may be organised in Great Britain.

The irony of this being that Mao'sCommunists only fought against the Japanese when it became absolutelynecessary, otherwise they avoided fighting and left it to Chiang Kai-Shek'sNationalists who they later stabbed in the back.
