Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi is “isolated” and living in a “bubble”, says US diplomat and politician Bill Richardson, who just this past week resigned from an international panel advising her government on the Rohingya refugee crisis.

美国外交官和政治家比尔·理查森(Bill Richardson)表示，缅甸领导人昂山素季是“孤立的”，生活在“泡沫”之中。就在上周，他刚刚辞去了向缅甸政府提供有关罗辛亚难民危机咨询意见的一个国际小组的职务。

The former New Mexico governor said Ms Suu Kyi, whom he called a long-time friend, had developed a “siege mentality” in her position as Myanmar’s civilian leader, but added that Western governments should continue to engage with her.

“The relationship with the West, with human rights groups, with the United Nations, with the international media is terrible,” he told Reuters.

“And I think Aung San Suu Kyi has brought this upon herself, the constant disparagement of the international community, which I think can be helpful to her ...

She seems isolated

While on a visit to Myanmar, Mr Richardson suddenly resigned from the advisory board, calling it a “whitewash and a cheerleading operation” for Ms Suu Kyi.

Ms Suu Kyi’s office said on Thursday that her government had asked Mr Richardson to step down and accused him of pursuing “his own agenda”.

US and UN officials have described actions carried out by Myanmar’s military against the stateless Rohingya as “ethnic cleansing”.

The government in mostly Buddhist Burma views the Rohingya as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

“I think the Myanmar military is to blame a lot and the only person that can turn them around, I believe, is Aung San Suu Kyi, and she should start doing that,” Mr Richardson said.

Mr Richardson served as a US ambassador to the UN under former President Bill Clinton during the 1990s.

Around 688,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled from Rakhine to Bangladesh in recent months to escape an army crackdown.

Though Ms Suu Kyi – once regarded as a democracy icon - is the de facto head of Myanmar’s civilian government, she is constitutionally limited in her control of the country and the military is in charge of the operations in Rakhine

Still, she has faced widespread international criticism for not speaking out in defence of the Rohingya and for expressing doubts about allegations of human rights abuses.

Mr Richardson said it was important for Western governments, the United Nations and Ms Suu Kyi to enter into a new dialogue “to try to help each other, not to keep fighting each other” before any thoughts of new sanctions on Myanmar.

Mr Richardson suddenly resigned from the advisory board,"No he did not resign. He was expelled by the orders of the Myanmar government. He had a record of financial misconduct and was no longer a useful member of the team.

There goes Simon justifying the massacre, and supporting the brutal regime of the myanmar military junta....Bill Richardson, a career diplomat, highly respected, was part of an international advisory board  panel, and in no way working for the myanmar government. If he was asked to leave, it was because he myanmar government did not want their war crimes discovered, and Suu Kyi's complicity exposed.

Those making excuses are Islamaphobic. The have the disgusting habit of reading an article, showing Muslims as innocent victims, and they attacking insulting them, their religion, their Prophet, their Holy Book, and the entire people.  They must have sad lives to hate so much.

Like every complicated situation around the world, there are wheels within wheels, and what you see is not what you get.  This brutal regime has massacred thousands of innocent people, who are totally helpless.  What threat were these unarmed people? They are the world's most persecuted, with no powers, rights, and certainly no democratic rights. So why did these scumbags in the military rape, kill babies, burn homes, and line up males and kill them?  Hatred?  Why are those nations that are quietly arming and training these brutes, doing so, and why aren't Western nations like the US, and the EU, strongly condemning those arming this military junta, and imposing strong sanctions against these nations?Suu Kyi has duped the world with her angelic demeanor and big talk about equality and democracy for all.She has turned out to be a fake, and  complicit  in this brutal massacre, by doing nothing, and saying nothing.She has suddenly become deaf, dumb, and blind.

There has been minor uprisings in the north of Burma for some years! That there is/was Rohinga armed terrorists is indisputable!The UK Foreign Office has long advised tourists not to go into the north because of the terrorists!Aung San Suu Kyi is the civilian leader but within a minority party living under a military regime who hold all the power!If she were not in her somewhat toothless position the civil rights within Burma would be much worse.

You should be intelligent enough to differentiate between terrorists, and unarmed civilians, the most persecuted in the world (not my words, but of the UN). There is no justification for the brutal massacre, rape, and torture, of thousands dirt poor, POWERLESS PEOPLE. Get real, and stop the excuses.
