China hasreportedly reassigned over 60,000 soldiers to plant trees in a bid to combatpollution by increasing the country's forest coverage.

A large regimentfrom the People's Liberation Army, along with some of the nation's armed policeforce, have been withdrawn from their posts on the northern border to work onnon-military tasks inland.

The majority willbe dispatched to Hebei province, which encircles Beijing, according to the AsiaTimes which originally reported the story. The area is known to be a majorculprit for producing the notorious smog which blankets the capital city.

The idea isbelieved to be popular among members of online military forums as long as theycan keep their ranks and entitlements.

It comes as partof China's plan to plant at least 84,000 square kilometres (32,400 squaremiles) of trees by the end of the year, which is roughly equivalent to the sizeof Ireland.

In Canada I havefriends every year that go up north to plant trees. They get paid quite wellactually from the government (after you get fast at planting, since you getpaid per tree).

I think incountries with small professional armies, its better for them to train and doother military stuff than go plant trees in a mosquito infested swamp up northlol

Most soldiers havebetter things to do than plant trees. China has more soldiers than it needs andcant think of anything else for them to do. Developed countries mostly paysoldiers to be soldiers and pay adventurous youths to plant trees.

Also China has ahuge problem with the desert encroaching on their heartland so they have beenplanting millions of trees to combat this.

Well technicallytheir army has 1.6 million personnel. However if you add up all branches of thearmed forces such as air force and navy, it would exceed 2 million.

In China, the wordfor 'Army' can also mean simply an organised and trained collective of men thatcan be ordered to do...well...anything.

FOr example, thePLA actually excels as a first responder and it's one it's primary duties,especially for the poor peasants living out west who might not have theresources to set up a proper police/fire department/ambulance. Something goeswrong, the PLA choppers in and lends a hand.
