China’s economic rise is well-known. But the vast improvement in the health and longevity of its people—despite appalling levels of pollution—is less so. A new study published in theLancet for the first time offers a province-by-province breakdown of China’s health. Our map displays life expectancy at birth for each of the 33 provincial-level regions, matched with the country that is most similar by this measure.

The study* shows that a baby born in China in 1990 would live on average to the age of 68. One born in 2013 could expect to reach 76, beyond the age at which Confucius said “one can follow one’s heart’s desires—without crossing the line.” There is a large disparity between provinces, but the gap is narrowing. In Shanghai life expectancy is now 83—as good as Switzerland. People in six areas live longer than Americans. The most impressive progress has taken place in the most benighted regions: a child in Tibet born in 1990 had a life expectancy of 56, akin to one of the poorest African countries. This has risen to 70, roughly the same as Moldova, one of Europe’s poorer countries.

The causes of death are also changing. There has been much progress in reducing infectious diseases (albeit less for HIV/AIDS). But diseases associated with lifestyle—such as strokes and heart disease—are now the biggest killers.

Few people in Tibet, let alone China as a whole, wants the Dalai Lama. Dalai Lama and his clique of monks have sold themselvex to the CIA. The CIA, for their part, use theDalai Lama and his clique to destabilise China by carrying out various terrorist activities. It is a pity that the representatives of such a great religion could stoop so low. At the same time, the CIA uses its money to carry out in the western media an abject campaign of disinformation and misrepresentation of the situation in Tibet to fool the naive western population.

Life expectancy as in Switzerland

There is something strange here. According to the map the life expectancy in Shanghai is very long (83 years) and it is almost as long in neighbouring Zheijang.
However, we are frequently informed about the bad state of air pollution in China and about its ill effects on people, e.g.

http://aqicn.org/city/shanghai/
where Shanghai stands out not as the worst but nevertheless as a really bad place for air quality.
These facts are hard to reconcile. If the life expectancy map is correct air pollution apparently has negligible effects.
Is this yet another proof that the environmentalists are overstating their case?

2 other things could be at play here:
1. environmental effects are not well-studied enough to affect actuarial models
2. With cleaner air Shanghai's life expectancy would be significantly greater than 83 years

Say a Tibetan, looking at this map and says: 'I need to move to shanghai so I can live longer'.
If you think he is kind of stupid, what do you think of the policy that 'since high school graduate earns more money and pays more tax, we should give everyone a high school diploma'.
Or, the thinking that 'since overwhelming majority of college graduates vote Democrats, we should give everyone a free two-year community college education'...
Equally stupid? hehehe...

Assuming that these stats are correct, it is fortunate that the Chinese people do not have to consider all the diet articles and studies that North Americans and Europeans are faced with on a daily basis - just increase the quality of medical care and living standards and people live longer - why spend all this time worrying about eating too much meat or/and butter, because, if you stay fit, at the margin it really does not make much difference - it's really about genetics!

Dear TE:
This map is not quite useful...its not the same as labeling each of China's provinces with a country's GDP.
I doubt the average reader can really get a sense of how different life expectancy rates are across all these countries since most of them fall within a pretty narrow range.
My humble suggestion:
A simple bar graph comparing the top 5 provinces of today vs back in 1990, and the bottom 5 provinces of today vs back in 1990.

Decreasing child mortality can really boost average longevity numbers, even if the pollution gets to you after 30 or 50. Unlike a democracy, China won't tolerate a model/actress saying that vaccines cause autism (disproven!) and can ensure all children get vaccinated. Alas, freedom of speech means morons get a voice too.

MagicMoneyFrogin reply to MichaelTheGringoNov 12th, 03:22

The worst thing is that some readers from China will take this report as a proof that drinking hot water is better than cold water and tea better than...well, any other delicious drink. But healthier is not better my chinese friends! The same way living to 83 is not better than 75, just longer. And if you don′t believe me ask any finance minister from any country what would they prefer!!
..and now, call me suicidal, I′m going to eat bacon, drink a coke...and drive a Volkswagen.

I've been to all these countries bar Paraguay and I have a very, very hard time believing Cambodians live longer than Moldovans.

Well color me corrected, I guess. I fully admit my evidence is anecdotal, and the Lancet is a trustworthy source. That wouldn't really explain Guatemala, a country with a poor diet and one of the highest murder rates in the world, but I'm willing to take their word for it. Perhaps excessive alcohol consumption may be a factor as well. I think the sole thing I liked better in Moldova than Cambodia (god knows food was not one) was the wine :).

Longevity is one of the main reasons why China has to ease up on the one child policy. With people living over 76 years on average instead of ~65 in the 60's, there will be a lot more seniors to be cared for and more working age people will be needed to provide the funds.
The other policy needs to be re-visited is the retirement age. The current retirement age is 60 for men and 55 for women set in the 60's when the average life expectancy were much lower and should be revise to 65 years for both sexes. The revision should help the working population and less pressure on pension funds.

ashbirdin reply to canabanaNov 12th, 09:19
I agree. Retirement age should be reset. 65 for both genders.
Also, there should be continuing government funded health education regarding smoking cessation, general dietary literacy (reduce use of animal fat and transfat, reduce salt, etc). Traditional health enhancement techniques such as Qigong practice should be popularized. A culture of filial piety should be fostered, not by force, but by example setting by young parents who have living parents of their own. Filial piety is an attitude of respect toward one's own parents, one of the most, if not the most, precious virtue in our 5000 year old culture - 孝.
