Illegal ivory value has halved in China according to newresearch, leading to hopes that the demand which drives poaching in Africamight be on the wane.

根据新的研究结果，非法象牙在中国的价值已经减半，所以人们有理由相信非法象牙的需求正渐渐减少。对非法象牙的需求驱使着非洲的非法狩猎。

Kenya-based conservation organisation Savethe Elephants said on Monday that the price of illegal raw ivory in China hadfallen to $1,100 (￡734) per kg, down from a record high last year of $2,100.

位于肯尼亚的环境组织“拯救大象”周一称非法象牙原料在中国的价格已经从去年破纪录的每公斤2100美元下降到现在的1100美元。

“The news gives cautious hope that theunsustainable killing of Africa’s elephants – driven by demand for their tusks– may eventually be reduced,” Save the Elephants said.

“这个消息让人们产生了希望，即因象牙需求而导致对非洲大象的不可持续杀戮可能最终会得到缓解，”该组织称。

The group added that at current prices thecriminal gangs that run the illegal ivory trade will still make profits butthat “the trend is a positive sign”.

China has this year taken steps to reduceboth the legal and illegal ivory trades – although a total ban has not been putin place – and awareness of the impact of the trade on Africa’s elephants isgrowing among Chinese consumers.

Illegal ivory value has halved in Chinaaccording to new research .... maybe we should read it the other way round. Thesupply of illegal ivory has increased which depresses the prices and would bebad news for elephants.

It's the illegal trade that's causing muchof the problem, but I think there was a tacit approval by the state who werenot prosecuting anyone. If that's changing then that's great news. Let's hope!
