Taiwan knows that it's on thin ice already. China warned the country, that if they tried to go independent then the troops would be sent, and it would be game over. So why US is yet again interfering with a sovereign state is beyond me. They really can't help themselves, can they ?

Taiwan is a sovereign state and China - if it genuinely was the confident, modernising place it claims to be - would step back and recognise that. The more it complains about Taiwan the smaller, more petty, stupid and insecure it looks.

Such announcements are meaningless if Taiwan refuses to buy--which is what has happened to most of these American arms sale announcements, for several reasons: 1) Taiwan doesn 't really have that much money to buy a lot of very expensive American weapons. 2) The weapons tend to be second-hand and without updated technology, and therefore basically useless. 3) Consequently, there's growing resistance among the people in Taiwan to such weapons purchase. 4) There is also growing realization in Taiwan that it is absolutely not in a position to engage Chinese mainland in an arms race--its economy being less than 5% of Chinese economy. Maintaining the currently friendly ties with Chinese mainland is far more important to Taiwan's security than pointless purchase of American weapons.

Wrong. It looks likely that the DPP will win both the presidency and the parliament.
That, however, cannot change the fact that during the past 16 years--8 years of DPP government followed by 8 years of KMT government, Taiwan has bought only a small portion of arms that US has promised to sell in a series of arms sales announcements--to the chagrin of American arms dealers.
So what's your point?

This is a bunch of old or small hardware that will not shift the balance of power at all.
The simple fact is, if Taiwan ever feels that it's survival may be at stake then their only real option is to develop nukes.

At this stage the power disparity is such that this is just a quick buck for the americans and that's it. They could sell taiwan an entire carrier group and they'd still get overwhelmed by PRC in any confrontation. There is no strategic balance in the strait any more. 1.3bil sale? China spends that every 3 days and that's just what they're telling us about.
Just the standard theater, taiwan has to treat itself to something something and china has to huff and puff. Tommorow it will be back to business as usual.
