TOKYO — Japanese cars could behacked and remote-controlled through smartphones if they were equipped withdevices connected to the Internet, according to an experiment conducted by anassociate professor at Hiroshima City University’sGraduate School of Information Sciences.

In the experiment, Hiroyuki Inoue remotelyopened and closed car windows, displayed an incorrect speed meter reading andparalyzed the car’s accelerator, although the effects do not directly apply tocars currently on the market as their computers have no Internet access, hesaid.

But Inoue warns that cars privately altered andattached with Internet devices could be hacked as Japanese manufacturers aredeveloping Internet-linked technologies such as self-driving vehicles.

He announced the details of the experiment at asymposium on cyber security starting Tuesday in Okinawa.

What Inoue used are Toyota Motor Corp’s CorollaFielder Hybrid, which went on sale in 2013, a Wi-Fi device he assembled withcommercially available parts that cost only about 10,000 yen and a smartphoneapp he developed to remote-control the vehicle.

As a result, the hacked vehicle showed a readingof 180 kilometers per hour on its speed display even though it was parked.

But the maneuver could not start the engine or move thesteering wheel, Inoue said.

And some people want self-driving cars? self driving cars are coming whether you like it or not. within 10-15 years self driving cars will record less accidents than human drivers resulting in lower fatalities , insurance premiums etc. they actually do it now with Googles self driving car R&D.

like any new tech there are problems, most will be fixed as the technology improves. like i said self driving cars wont get tired, drunk, or cause a crash that human drivers are prone to. Even the new auto braking systems which are an automated feature, will be compulsory in the US within a few years. crashes, fatalities, cost assosiciated with that will drop dramtically in the coming decades because of this tech. Youll find that driving a car yourself will probably require higher insurance premiums as the risks will be higher. Humans drivers will never react as fast as a computer in a emergency situation.

Given the way all our other freedoms and pleasures are going you might well be right. But I have had enough experience of computers to know that their reliability (hardware and software and sensors) is suspect. When your automated braking suddenly deploys inappropriately I hope the car companies will be taking full responsibility. And if it does become compulsory then, like happened with ABS braking, drivers will drive faster and closer believing they are safe. Automatic braking on motorways will likely cause accidents, phantom jams and traffic waves. Driving is more than just about reaction times; it is also about being able to assess conditions and the situation some distance ahead and drive accordingly, mostly slower. It is unlikely we will see any such farsighted software any time soon.

Gee. If I have to add hardware not sold as an accessory to the car and plug it into the car's diagnostic port in order to be able to "hack" into the car remotely, how does that put the cars on the road at risk of being remotely hacked? The hacker would have to have access to the inside of your car prior to "hacking" it.

No big deal. Any skilled electronic engineer, technician or even ham radio operator or experimenter knows that any mechanical device could be remotely controlled if the appropriate radio and controller is attached to the device. It doesn′t matter if the device is a Japanese car, a toy car, war tank, airplane or a nuclear plant. And by the way, you can use any radio or optical transmitter/receiver, including a smartphone or even a TV remote control to do the task.

没什么大不了的。任何技艺精湛的电子工程师,技术员甚至是业余的无线电操作员都知道,任何的机械设备,只要处于适当的频率之下,或是联接上了控制器,都是可以进行远程控制的。与它究竟是辆日本车,还是辆玩具车,还是战争坦克,或是飞机或核电站根本没什么关系。顺便说一下,你可以使用任意频率或是光学发射器/接收器,其中包括智能手机或是电视遥控器,来完成这项任务。

As smithinjapan says, "The issue is that self-driving calls will NEED to be connected or they won't be able to function, plain and simple." Do you imagine that self-driving cars won't be connected to the internet? By then they will be practically the only items that won't be, if so.
