tear-stained Barack Obama marked his final year in office with a last-ditch call for US gun control on Tuesday as he outlined new rules that will close important background check loopholes but leave much of the political heavy lifting to his successor.

In a much-anticipated speech that focused more on what still needed to be done than the limited set of executive actions announced in advance by the White House, the president painted gun reform as the last great civil rights challenge of his generation.

“In Dr King’s words, we need to feel the fierce urgency of now, because people are dying,” a visibly emotional Obama told an audience of mass shooting victims and relatives in the East Room.

A pathetic weakling who has done untold damage to the power and prestige of the United States.

Throwing rocks at women is monolithic. The right to bare arms is archaic.
Nations and their leaders need to address their own problems and stop the hypocrisy.

Just a quick question to those who think that background checks violates their constitutional rights:
Does "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" include the right to pursue employment in (take your pick) job x, y or z.

There will be shootings, only this time verbally, as Donald Trump starts shooting his big fat mouth off, as he engages that odious organ before engaging his very mixed up brain.

Background checks??! but I'm angry now and I know where the guy lives dammit!!

Here′s another bit of rushed writing: " jolt the American public out of the political stalemate." I think there are a few metaphors crushed unhappily into that. The politicians are caught in a stalemate. The public aren′t stuck in a stalemate, are they? It′s a blend of ideas I don′t want to untangle. It probably is trying to say that Obama wants to encourage the public to be more vocal about their unhappiness with the political stalement.

I bet he spent a lot of time in private prefecting those tears. They nearly didn't come in the end.

There are other more important aspects of this story to discuss. I would still like to ask why Obama was described as tear-stained. He may have wept and indeed it looks like he did. But was his face or clothing stained? He isn′t a handkerchief he′s the commanderinchief.

Let's for a moment take the president's tears to be sincere. That he has genuinely in all these years in office, as supposedly the most powerful man in the country, done everything within his powers, but failed to convince the REAL powers that be, to stop this Cow Boy, the "right to bear arms" the Indians are coming mentality, that has been the basis of this countries existence since the 17th century. Then this 100% proves that there is no such thing as democracy in the USA. That the right to vote means absolutely nothing, because the person (party) you vote in to run the country, to "protect his people", has no power whatsoever to run the country, unless of courses you vote for a Bush, who worked for the arms industry anyway. Was their official sales man, marketing man, PR man, with with his best mate Tony (blood on his hands) Blaire...

At the very last Obama shows us the potential that made him the great hope around the World.
Too little, too late. A tragedy really.

ponderwell  michelangeli 6 Jan 2016 09:28
Obama followed the modern tradition of hope. The allegiance to 'Liberty and Justice
for All' is the great hope for change; if ever there was - - noble virtues which are fading in favor of the almighty profits to be gained.

The US allowed about any criminal or mental case access to guns ($$ profit first) then the frightened public wanted more protection/guns. Profit before people: Madness Mission Accomplished. It's an old story of greed and misery.

In 2015 terrorists killed 14 people in Americans. Americans killed another 30,000 Americans.
We now know where stupid lives

then they should start bombing themselves into oblivion!

30,000? That′s a really big number. I had heard it before but it′s a statistic that′s hard to come to terms with.

fatfreddysfingers  bertnairobi 6 Jan 2016 09:19
It's true. Though no doubt there'l be a flood of people saying "yeah but 20k of them are suicide" as if that makes it somehow acceptable.

I thought that the right to bear arms was in militias to fight the British. I think that this constitution thing is due a makeover. May good sense prevail. Weapons are for hunting for food with and for nothing else. Thou shalt not kill means just that. Humanity needs to evolve.

I don't get how the second amendment can't be amended! Except, of course, that the NRA et al don't/won't allow it. Interesting that a LOT of what Trump is saying goes against the Constitution- why aren't people shouting about that? Maybe they are, I/we just haven't heard about it. The media is always full of bias.
Interestingly, I had lunch with a good friend yesterday who is from Michigan, and has just come back from her Christmas trip back home. She told me that a neighbour of hers owns a huge independent supermarket, and in a room at the back he sells guns. He just told her that he has never been as busy as he is now....

It's worth bearing in mind that Ronald Reagan was in favour of increased checks before people were allowed to buy guns. His views back in the 80s on gun control were pretty close to Obama's now.
