Following NorthKorea on Twitter is not a crime, court rules

A South Koreancourt said on Thursday it had acquitted a man of sympathising with North Korea forfollowing its Twitter account, arguing that simply reading Pyongyang’s socialmedia posts did not violate Seoul’s security laws.

Seoulprosecutors earlier charged the 73-year-old journalist with “distributing”materials that praised the communist North by following Pyongyang’s officialTwitter account, @uriminzok.

Lee was, however, found guilty of supporting the North in his own blog postings and wassentenced to a one-year jail term, suspended for two years.

South Korea’sNational Security Laws, enacted in 1948 to protect the fledgling state frominfiltration by the communist North, ban its citizens from praising orsympathising with Pyongyang.

Quiz question:in which country has a man been put on trial for reading stuff on the internetand jailed for a year for expressing his opinions in a blog - the EvilCommunist Dictatorship of Korea or the Nice Free Democracy of Korea?

He got a trial? So obviously not the DPRK then...
It may haveescaped your notice, but the Korean war is still ongoing. During WWII weimprisoned fascists.
So, your pointis?

I think we shouldcut South Korea some slack.
They are bang-upagainst, cheek by jowl, the most totalitarian state in the world. One run by aclown who makes the emperor Nero seem like a contemporary figure.
To make mattersworse, these military gangsters and hereditary loons are developing ( or atleast so they tell us ) a H-bomb - and have proven they have little concern forthe wellbeing of their own people ( millions starve while they spend on weapons) let alone that of anyone else's people.
We of allsocieties should know, when threatened by a totalitarian enemy - our owngovernments get ever so slightly authoritarian in response - sometimesnecessarily so.

Have southKorea, really got nothing better to do, than try and prosecute someone fromreading or following what another country is doing? or are they, becoming liketheir allies, paranoid?
As for nationalsecurity, the term has been so over-used, that it has become a joke! It's abouttime south Korea and the west tried, although it will be very difficult, togrow up.

It must be soliberating having the freedom to say what you like in South Korea compared tothose bastard commies over the border. Oh wait.....

Free speech inthe US seems like a panacea but the inequality is so great that that a richminority of voices are able to control the agenda. In the US the richer you arethe more 'Free' you are and that ain't fair or sustainable.

Should give theloonies who bang on about the UK being some sort of authoritarian regime a bitof perspective. It won't though.

At least the SKgovernment aren't repeatedly sidestepping parliamentary process andimplementing legislation that wasn't in their pre-election manifesto though...

Falsecomparison, eh? Choosing not to issue a visa is rather different than tossing aresident in jail.

I really preferthe US model. Free speech, even if we don't like it.
