China installed half of all new wind capacity worldwide last year, according to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).

The country added an “astonishing” 30.5 gigawatts (GW) to boost installations to 145.1GW, the Brussels-based industry group said on Wednesday.

It overtook the EU total for the first time, which added a record 6GW to increase its capacity to 141.6GW.

You joke but the rare earth magnets and the toxic waste they produce is pretty poorly handled in China, much of it gets dumped in rivers or lakes near the factory or mine.

EGriff  GrandMoffTanner 3d ago
Yes, but that's true of every single Chinese industry - they all don't manage their toxic waste. It is not the case that only making turbines creates toxic waste.
If China cleaned up its act across the board, it could produce all products without environmental damage.

Therein lies the problem, the rare earth metals in question aren't particularly rare, they are extremely expensive to actually extract in compliance with either European or American environmental legislation. How much the market would shrink and the prices would go up for anything containing those is worrying if China did "Clean up"

The tory government voluntarily cut subsidies to the solar panel industry, effectively prohibiting its growth in favour of badgering fossil fuel rich nations.
More importantly the government stripped down on green building codes that's destroying incentives to insulate houses for better energy efficiency.
What an idiotic fallacy trying to pin the cost on refugees, this is nobody else but the crude-happy government's fault.

HauptmannGurski  xesolor 3d ago
What I meant was that Germany was quite an engine and the funds that they have to spend on refugees are and will be very substantial. I have read figures between 6 and 60 billion

Probably not, since they never take into account how big the population of China is when they talk about carbon emission or how many people are excuted every year.

Tesla is not a high volume manufacture to make much of a difference, they sold 50,000 cars in 2015. The major auto makers sell ~8-10 million/year.
To clear the air, China needs high volume, low cost cars. The $35-40K price tag for the model 3 may be a bit high for the Chinese masses.

Mining operations to secure enough supplies to produce batteries for the electric cars required to make a dent will devastate the environment on a different front. Like my economic professor said on the first day of my undergraduate class: "There is no such thing as a free lunch" before launching into a lesson on trade-offs of every decision that a government would make.

China overtakes EU to become global wind power leader.
This has to be good news however you look at it.
Another big area for break through is solar energy. Chin ahas vast area of deserts where solar panels can be installed to harvest energy.
The power generated that way can easily exceed hydro power and wind power adding together and more, and it is definitely low cost and incredible clean.

More good environmental news!
Constructive effects by countries, industries and individuals are what is making this happen.
With the huge amounts of money going into renewables every year, things should keep getting better and better.
It is efforts like this, and of those actively involved with them, that are helping us to address climate change.

this is a completely useless statement because the technology doesn't exist. another technology known as "traveling wave" or "terra power" follows the same concepts but is another 15 to 20 years away. we are in a crisis NOW and can't wait for this tech to come online.
the closest tech to this is the tokamak which has been worked on since the 50's. ITER are about to start testing theirs for nuclear fusion. this is more of a reality then what PRISM is, although this tech will serve a purpose once it's finally built and if we're still around to make it.
right now - the only way forward is renewables
