Western air superiority is under threat from new fighter jets, missiles, and stealth tech developed by Russia and China, the RAF chief warns.

Air Chief Marshall Stephen Hillier said Britain's rivals were more competitive in the skies than any time since the Cold War, and catching up.

'The global situation has changed, and fast,' he said at a ceremony in Paris on Friday to mark the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force, of which his is the head.

Well at least the brass are taking it seriously in public before they are retired. If a few more of them had put their oaths ahead of their pensions and promotion prospects we might have overturned some of the crazy budget cuts made in the last 20 years.

I don't think the British can try and put themselves in the same boat as the Americans, Chinese etc, who both spend far higher proportions of GDP on the military, and both are constantly developing new designs and building them in numbers. Our military is no longer seen as relevant, or even a credible deterent, because there has been no investment. Look at the state of the three services and the state of procurement. An island nation with far-flung protectorates and a permanent seat on the UN Security Council and we're planning to have a fleet of 18 or fewer destroyers and frigates?

If we ever fall behind Russia or China, the odds are they would flex their muscle and soon start bullying and grabbing territory from their neighbors. We are NOT re-investing in our military. Why are hull numbers continuing to fall in the RN? Why is the regular Army being constantly downsized, with successive governments claiming that reservists (who they can't recruit in anywhere near sufficient numbers, and simply don't have the skills and experience of regulars) can fill the gap?

Even when the RAF finally receives the first American F35 aircraft it seems we can't afford to operate them. There are only 28 Tornado aircraft that are combat ready and of the 126 Typhoons, only around half of those are operationally ready at any one time. We are no longer a world power in aviation terms thanks to multiple "bad spending" decisions by governments (of both colours) over the last 20 years.......
