A Chinese film tycoon has splashed out nearly £22m on a 124-character letter that was penned nearly 1,000 years ago by a Song dynasty scholar.
Wang Zhongjun, a self-made billionaire who some say is China’s answer to Shakespeare in Love producer Harvey Weinstein, purchased the letter at an auction in Beijing on Sunday, according to reports in the Chinese media.
Wang, the 55-year-old chairman of Huayi Brothers Media, one of China’s largest entertainment groups, reportedly paid 207 million yuan (£21.9m/US$31.7m).

The letter – thought to be the only surviving work by Song dynasty scholar and government official Zeng Gong – was written on 27 September 1080, according toChina Radio International. It is called Jushi Tie, which roughly translates as “a letter on happenings”.
In his brief dispatch – which is written in an archaic form of the Chinese language that makes its meaning hard to grasp for speakers today – the author addresses a close friend, thanking him for his unwavering support in his career.

I wish the article would tell us more about the ancient Chinese philosopher and his work than about the life of today's billionaire.

Capitalism in China is just as ugly and destructive to society as it is in every other place. Capitalism ALWAYS creates inequity and those who become rich begin to throw their weight around bribing government to get what they want and robbing society of its most precious products.
"Capitalism with Chinese characteristics" looks a hell of a lot like capitalism everywhere else, full of vulgar greed and corruption.

I take it, this is the only surviving original work written by the scholar personally. I hope there is other work of his that survived either in forms of copies or translations?

A piece of history such as this belongs to everyone, first and foremost the People of China. It should not be "owned' by a private individual.

These red stamps are marked by former owners of the art piece, or by famous art critics after viewing the piece. You can think of them as facebook likes in the past. These marks validates the works authenticity and often can be used to trace the entire history of the work.

Famous art critics putting stamps on an antique art piece? Either you are mistaken or habits in China are really different - imagine reaction to some critic scribbling on Leonardo da Vinci's "Codex Leicester".

It's a quite attractive document to look at, well laid out, short and to the point, conveying the writers feelings perfectly.
But the spelling is fucking atrocious.

32 million is expensive but there is something exquisite and unique that a personal letter written a thousand years ago has survived. It's a mini time machine into humanity.
Having watched the very entertaining series of programs on Chinese history on the BBC by Michael Wood, the Song Dynasty seems to have been a very special time indeed.

Recently things have been good. I've had a lot of leisure time but whatever I do I feel peaceful and lucky. Because I'm far away I cannot listen attentively to your wise words. The original text of nearly 1000 years old was stated to be only 124 characters long in the article. Your modern translation of the same text looks to be at least two to three times as long even though I have little knowledge in Chinese language. Is that progress?

Documents like this are invaluable and can provide a wealth of information for historians and linguists. For one, the content, even if trivial at first sight, always opens up a window into life in a different era and can provide interesting details about persons and events, as well as links which were suspected, but not proven. Secondly, word usage, spelling, and letter forms can help document linguistic influences and changes, and in exciting cases prove that a word or expression was used earlier than previously believed or cast additional light on its etymology. Plus, the paper and the ink tell stories of their own about techniques used in a specific decade and area and about plant species and minerals existent at the time; scholars can tell if they were locally made or imported, and that also provides information on manufacturing and commerce.
For these reasons, it's a bit sad when rare documents, books, and works of art end up in private collections. Sure, you can get a fair bit of information from a photograph, but it's not the same as working with the original and being able to run tests. Some, which are sold directly rather than through an auction house, never even get described and photographed, so no one can study them even superficially. I find it greedy and selfish to squirrel away artifacts, even if you acquire them out of interest rather than as an investment, and especially when you're not going to be writing extensively about them and making them available to other scholars to research.

The content of the letter reminds you of those letters home tablets discovered at Hadrian's Wall (like, oh, and could you send a few pairs of socks, it get's cold in winter up here). How the gap between the ages is actually small.

It looks like a fantastically preserved ancient document. I would liked to have read more background to this story I.E. when and where it was discovered; was it kept in China or elsewhere? etc etc.
Good luck to the new owner, though surely something as important and ancient as this, should have been procured by the Chinese government and kept for National posterity.
