Donald Trump has suggested that under his leadership America would not necessarily come to the aid of a Nato ally under attack saying he would first consider how much they have contributed to the alliance.

They are basically a very large island with every thing you could want to hand so why would they care about the outside world. it only needs to affect them if there was nuclear attack that changed the worlds atmosphere. Too late now but not interfering would of been good in Ira and Syria

NATO's mutual defence guarantees can't be conditioned like this at the peril of becoming totally worthless. A strategic defence treaty - especially among nuclear-capable powers - must be known among friends and foes alike to be totally reliable bordering to automatic. The obvious reason is the prospective terrible price that might need to be paid in terms of lives and destruction.
If NATO's guarantees to the Baltics can't be trusted they can't be trusted anywhere else including for Britain. I'm no fan of Trident but this was an immediate proof why it fills a role.

I'm no fan of Trump but can see where he is coming from if certain members don't honour commitments they have made - ie target to spend 2% of GDP on defence by 2024 (as imperfect a measure as it is). There certainly does seem to be freeloading by some countries but the challenge is the lighter contributions by countries not at fear of being invaded (W. Europe) rather than those on border with Russia and with most to fear.

A more interesting question is if one NATO member attacks a non-member country does it mean that the whole NATO attacked it? And what happens when the attacked country tries to protect itself and shoots back?

Turkey can invade Iraq and send jihadis into Syria to fight Assad but if Syria or Iraq try and defend themselves mount a retaliatory attack then NATO the US has to intervene on Turkey's side.
