Why do some of the world’s top athletes look as though they’ve been on the receiving end of a brutal paintball firing squad?

But this is not the result of a corporate team-building exercise. The athletes are among the latest adherents to the traditional Chinese medicine treatment known as “cupping”.

This involves having hot suction cups applied to the skin for several minutes leaving what appears to be a circular love bite on the surface which can take over two weeks to fade.

The technique has been used for millennia but it shot to prominence in 2004 when US actor Gwyneth Paltrow attended a film premier with circular marks peppering her skin.

As a manual therapist and someone who provides cupping therapy for myself and others it is sad to see such biased articles. Why not try asking the athletes about it? From my experience and that of other manual therapists it is moderately effective at addressing musculoskeletal tightness and soreness especially when combined with range of motion exercises. Additionally it is very easy to do with the proper training. The tissue bruises more wherever the patient suffers from more soreness or tightness. Additionally the 'wet' cupping is outside of my scope of practice in the US but I have had it done and it does get rid of stagnant blood. Areas of chronic injury that are punctured and cupped have dark purple and black jelly like blood come out. And areas of no pain and no tightness that are punctured and cupped just bleed with normal color and consistancy. It is accepted science that blood surrounding chronically injured muscle and connective tissue becomes deoxegenated and dehydrated. The immediate effectiveness of cupping and properly used 'wet' cupping is known to those who practice it and have recieved it. However its long term benefits or risks are not well researched.
