Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui hoped she’d wow the world with her backstroke. Instead she is breaking the Chinese internet with her hilarious post-swim interviews.

“Whoooaah! I was so fast!” explained Fu after she clocked 58.95 seconds coming in third in the women’s 100m backstroke semifinal on Monday. “I didn’t hold back…I used all of my mystic energy!”

That clip quickly went viral in China and beyond. Her legions of fans have since been creating emojis videos and cartoons in her likeness. Her followers on Weibo，China’s main social media platform， have climbed from about 550000 before the Olympics started to nearly 4 million as of Wednesday.

I don't think it is correct to translate what she said - "洪荒之力" as "mystic energy". She basically said that she had used all the energy that she had; that she had tried her hardest already. When I heard the phrase/idiom of "洪荒之力"; I thought it meant the power as great as a great flood.

我认为将“洪荒之力”翻译为mystic energy（神秘力量）是不对的。她说自己已经用尽了全力。我觉得这个词的意思是力量犹如大洪水那么猛烈

"Mystic energy" the phase she said is a popular catchphrase among Chinese youngsters which just means ones ultimate energy in a rather comic and playful way. Originally used to describe a powerful flood which nearly destroyed the whole universe in prehistorical mythology the phrase was only been used in some chines kungfu fictions before it went viral on internet.
