In a week dominated by controversy over China’s soft power forays in Australian politics a new report recommends the Australian government take practical steps to level the playing field and exert some soft power of its own.

The report from Wanning Sun professor of media and communication at the University of Technology Sydney suggests the Australian government “could take the opportunity to use Chinese online media to exert Australian soft power and explain its position on controversial matters such as the South China Sea dispute.”

It also suggests Australian business interests should be much more active on Chinese social media sites like WeChat.

The new analysis considers whether or not Chinese media outlets in Australia are now little more than propagandists for the regime at home.

It notes that Chinese-language media in Australia used to be dominated by outlets catering to earlier Cantonese-speaking generations.

“Nowadays a vibrant media landscape has emerged that targets a Mandarin-speaking migrant community from the People’s Republic of China” the report says. “Accompanying this shift in consumer demographic has been a discernible shift from a mostly critical coverage of China to a mostly supportive stance.”

The analysis notes that the shift in tone has happened during a period where the Chinese state-run media has become “to some extent integrated with Chinese media in Australia.”

“That said there is little clear evidence that such localised propaganda has a direct impact on Chinese-speaking audiences let alone the broader Australian community” the report says noting Chinese migrants are often sceptical about state media and have access outside China to a range of publications and points of view.

The report follows a week of controversy after it was revealed the Labor senator Sam Dastyari asked a Chinese businessman to cover a travel overspend.

In asking for and accepting a payment of $1670.82 from a businessman Minshen Zhu Dastyari said he had “fallen short” in his duty as a member of parliament and he resigned from the Labor front bench on Wednesday evening.

The imbroglio has triggered a conversation about China’s exercise of soft power in this country through business and political networks and there is now a significant push on to ban foreign donations as part of an overhaul of the donations and disclosure system.

Of course we've all forgotten about the Liberal party's use and abuse of so called Chinese social media soft power in Chisolm in the last election.

They managed to spread propaganda and lies that were most effective most notably a vote for Labor was a vote for bestiality as part of the marriage equality debate.

Needless to say no one called the cops.

Of course you forgot about the ALP's lie on social media ( plus massive texting scandal) about the LNP "privatising Medicare".....

mostlygrey Carstendog 4d ago
Yes but that got legs because we all know the LNP have been snipping around the edges of Medicare for sometime so it's not altogether a lie.

Um I believe that the LNP did call the cops on that one

While influencing the Chinese has some merit the bigger issue is controlling a fifth column in Australia that actively seeks to influence government decisions that favour the PRC at the expense of Australian interests. There is enough evidence to show both the ALP and the LNP are open to this influence. This is a national security issue that dwarfs the war on terrorism.

Instead of exerting 'soft power' for political purposes how about we focus on generating more jobs for Australians?

From what I know Tourism Australia is doing quite well on Weibo with over half a million (roughly 530000) followers. Chinese tourists spent an average of nearly $8000 a visit in 2015 or $8.9 billion in total over the year to March.

I'd rather Turnbell use that 'soft power' to create more jobs for Australians than jeopardising the relationship with our largest trading partner over a few islands that are thousands of kilometres away from Australia.

Fully concur. We also have to remember the dispute over the South China Sea is with some ASEAN countries who have largely taken a softly softly approach. The PRC has been effective in getting elites in those countries through financial incentives to go along with what is happening. There is little Australia or even the US can effectively do when ASEAN resistance is negligible.

Yes im sure the good people of China would spend as much money as possible buying literally EVERYTHING Australian..... Land Power Ports Water... (air??)

How is this good for Australia though.

Sounds more like a painful death to me.

International institutions sound lovely in theory but they have no power or influence over superpowers they're just shaped by them.

ASEAN is the perfect example. As you mention China has already been successful in influencing ASEAN countries to ensure they don't work as a bloc on the South East Sea issue. May as well close the issue there.

Sick to death of this hypocrisy. If Chinese battleships cruised into the waters off Cuba the US would tell them to piss off in around 20 seconds flat. This despite the fact that no one actually owns the seas and oceans

mostlygrey  sebastian johann 4d ago
"the US would tell them to piss off in around 20 seconds flat"
Probably true enough but SE Asian countries are sharing their concerns with the US re South China Sea and China is trying to exert influence on the oceans and the seas that are owned by no one.
