François Hollande has sent one of the strongest warnings yet that Britain will have to pay a heavy price for leaving the European unx adding to deep concern in financial markets.

Angela Merkel talks about the 4 freedoms. The problem for the EU is that it does not have the most important freedom of all: democracy - the right to elect those who govern us. Junker one of several so-called unelected "presidents" in the EU is constantly telling the people of Europe what they may or may not do. But we have never had the option to vote for or against him.

PERFECT! Thank You Hollande! But let me correct you - it's not about punishing the UK. It's much simpler than that. All that is necessary is ruling out of EU benefits for non-EU countries and as has been said ad nauseous once again making clear that the four principles are non-negotiable - period. Simple as that ... and that'll do! I am glad that all 27 as well as the EU president commission and parliament are 100% on the same page. Oh ... and something I haven't heard in a while (suspicious silence) but something we have heard from the UK ad nauseum let me remind you of it though: Brexit means Brexit! And slowly but surely the Brits will understand what it actually means - how ironic ...

If you are protecting your interests in the East European countries by giving them the right to seek jobs anywhere they like in EU territories while taking the best of their industries own it and sell it back to them again yeah... you would be VERY protective of your Euro bureaucratic government interests.

So the peace right relations between nations everything the the EU claims it represents can be seen in the violence/aggression constantly expressed towards Britain for wanting to govern their own country by their own citizens? The whole EU is nothing but a farce. The more they tighten their fists the more countries will do the same as Britain and slip through their fingers. No. They were right to make us aware that actions have consequences a fact which appears to have escaped the attention of the BRexiteers. Someday they may grow up and realise that fact for themselves; in the meantime we grown ups have to deal with the world as it is.

As a French citizen living in the Uk I haven't got much time for Hollande one of the weakest president France has ever known. He is right to be firm on Europe though. Some Brexiteers here seem to discover that the aftermath of the vote isn't going to be plain sailing...
I think the view from quite a few continental european countries is that Britain already had a special treatment within the EU aka not in the eurozone and not in Schengen. Despite this it wasn't enough to make the UK stay in the EU.

Tell them the truth. We (continentals) think that they are the trojan horse of the US in Europe. Nothing less nothing more. The brexit vote is seen as a miracle over here. As if De Gaulle was winning against the American wish without war and after his death only because Britain shoot herself in the foot.

I don't think the assumption is that Brexit will be plain sailing. There will be problems and a degree of pain but the hope is that we be better off in the long term. More importantly though we will restore our democracy and that is priceless.
