Downing Street’s intensifyingflirtation with Beijing has yet to develop into a full-blown love affair,Chinese state media has warned, as president Xi Jinping touched down in Londonfor hisfirst state visit to Britain.

Officials in bothLondon and Beijing have trumpeted Xi’s four-day trip, which starts onTuesday, as the beginning of a “golden time” of relations through which Britain seeks to secure billions ofpounds of Chinese investment and Chinahopesto boost its global reach.

“Chinaattaches great importance to growing relations with the United Kingdom,” Xi said in a statement after landing at Heathrow airport with hiswife, Peng Liyuan. “Todeepen China-UK relationship is in the fundamental interests of both countriesand peoples, and meets the trend of the times.”

In an editorial, thegovernment-run China Daily newspaper predicted that Xi’s time in Britainwould feature “many memorablehighlights that will almost certainly grab the limelight back home”.

“Buthis visit is more about diplomatic realism. It is too early to talk about aUK-China ‘love story,’” theEnglish-language newspaper added.

UK prime ministerDavid Cameron and chancellor George Osborne have been waging an untiringcampaign to reconquer Beijing’s affections since the prime minister’s 2012 meeting with the Dalai Lama led to a lengthy diplomatic freeze.
Those attemptsat seduction included a controversial recent trip to China by Osborne, during which hevisited Xinjiang, which activists say has the worst human rights record of anyChinese region.
For many that tripwas a step too far.
“Thereare aspects of the charm offensive that I find very difficult to defend, mostimportantly George Osborne’s visit to Xinjiang,” said Michel Hockx, the director of the China Institute at theUniversity of London’s School of Oriental and AfricanStudies.

“I think that is an area where no matterwhat your position is towards the Chinese government and no matter how much youwant dialogue and mutual understanding, I think most people agree that what theChinese government is doing in Xinjiang is just wrong and is a violation ofpeople’s rights, religious freedom, religiousexpression and I don’t think George Osborne had anyreason to go there.”

In recent weekswestern diplomatic cables coming out of embassies in Beijing have been packedwith “snideremarks” about British kowtowing, according to the Financial Times.
“Whatwe are seeing is a case study in kowtow,” aninfluential retired senior US official said.
As Xi arrived inLondon on Monday night, Chinese media has swatted away such complaints.
“Britishsociety, like other western ones, holds a prejudice against the rising China.Yet this prejudice is not rooted in the UK’s coreinterests,” the Global Times tabloid argued in an editorial.
A front-page story in theCommunist party’sofficial mouthpiece, the People’s Daily, claimed countries uncomfortable with China’s rise were attempting to “sabotage” its golden friendship withBritain.
“Thereare eight hours’ time difference and 8,000km separatingBeijing and London. But the distance does not stop the people of both countriesfrom reaching out with friendship,” it said.

It is obviously an interesting display of evolving relations between us,although I was promised a 'golden friendship'. Then the article makes no directquote of this and it becomes 'golden time'. As long as it's golden, that's themain point.

Golden Shower more like...
those of us who have lived outside Britain know what the Chinesegovernment does to its clients countries. Just ask those African countries likeTanzania and Sierra Leone that pivoted towards China after independence. I'mafraid years of bullying and mass economic dumping now lie in store - inexchange for dodgy bits of "infrastructure" only Chinese engineerscan understand. God help us.

It still is exploitation. People are working in slave like conditions forchinese company bosses with zero interest in human rights. If that's whatEngland wants to become, you're welcome, I guess.
