The Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan had star billing at the Governors awards on Saturday night, in which the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences handed out four honorary Oscars.

Introducing Chan, Tom Hanks acknowledged that the blend of slapstick comedy and martial arts virtuosity for which the star became famous was “historically underrepresented at the Oscars”.

It always makes me smile to think of the Jackie Chan Science Centre at the John Curtin School of Medical Research (Australian National University). That's action science!
Mr Chan lived in Canberra for a while (his parents for longer) and donated to the centre.

As the movies bloke used to say on sbs (before sbs went to the dogs), you don't watch Jackie CHan movies for the Shakesperean acting and dialogue- you watch them for the epic fight scenes and eye-popping stunts

Chan's is decades overdue, but it's an example of someone who's award is for decades old work, rather than anything they've done recently.

His really early movies were pretty ordinary, but once he started getting some creative clouth with Golden Harvest, he pretty much reshaped the Hong Kong movie scene, and moved it to a whole new level- of course there were others doing this too, such as Samo Hung & Yuen Biao, Ringo Lam, Chow Yun Fat (surely one of the world's coolest men), and many others besides. But he was one of the main factors
