What a disgrace! Elderly man with a walking stick is left to stand on a packed train as not a single commuter offers him a seat
Fierce debate has been sparked on social media after an elderly man with a walking stick was left standing on a packed tube with no one offering him a seat.
The man was on the London Underground Circle Line when fellow standing commuter Piotr Peter Skupny took the picture.
Mr Skupny travelled for four stops watching the elderly man standing and holding on to both a pole and his walking stick, but no one ever offered him a seat.
He posted the image onto a community Facebook group called S*** London on Wednesday evening, where users can share images or stories showcasing their frustration with the capital.
And it has sparked debate with more than a thousand reactions, and over 300 comments with most people expressing their outrage at the sight, whilst others say they have offered elderly people seats before and they have said no or even been offended by the offer.
Christo Manmohan commented: ‘I feel sick ,poor man ,these people think that one day they will be old and frail but don't think to offer there seat.’
Jeashper Bronslon said: ‘Disgraceful, yeah a lot of kids lately haven't been taught proper manners but the older passengers have no excuse.’
Marta G Fernández added: ‘This image is disgusting. I would ask aloud to give up their seat at once. Unbelievable.’
But others believed the man had probably been offered a seat but had said no.
Per Viktor Enstrom added: ‘It's not uncommon at all that old people *doesn't* want seats that are offered, because it's often harder for them to sit/get up than it is to just stand for the journey.
Anthony Bennett agreed: ‘Don't forget people that once on the move some elderly can't sit down because they can't get up again!

I always offer my seat to older people. When I was young my parents always told me to stand for adults which is how it should be. I was on a bus full of kids once and ended up standing for a heavily pregnant woman while the ignorant kids just sat there.

that picture sums up new britain...invaded by immigrants and the british left to stand alone...that just there is why we voted brexit...it would have made a great poster

Also interesting that English has become the world langauge but if you wake down any of our high streets, you very rarely hear it being spoken.

London must be the most selfish city in the world it's like dog eat dog especially on the underground. The younger generation are mostly selfish all staring at mobile phones.

It's creepy on the New York subway; people coming up to you on the trains and start going on abut their lives. I was told not to make eye contact.

I offered an elderly gentleman a seat on a train last week and he kindly declined my offer telling me he was in better shape than I was, it did make me chuckle, I'm 37!

On a recent holiday in the UK we travelled by tube quite a lot and people offered me their seats almost every time. I am 75 years old and still fit but really appreciated their gesture of goodwill, something long gone here in Australia.

I was traveling from Kowloon Tong to the China border on the MTR train a couple of years ago, there was a young mother with pushchair and baby, I gave her my seat, when I stood up, one of the locals said to me, "what did you do that for"?? different thinking and cultures I suppose, I was raised in Berkshire and taught by my working class parents that good manners cost nothing, you do not see much "good manners" around Asia, I notice during my travels here.

total lack of education! I went into the post office last week with my stick. A young woman jumped up out of the only seat, rushed over to the door to open it for me and ushered me into her chair. She was no more than 20. I find n the Continent people are far more concerned about the elderly and ready to assist them at all times. In the UK when I lived there, it was part of my school training to always offer my seat to somebody elderly. What on earth happened to the old country!

During the Battle of Britain, 1940 WW2, the average age of the pilots who fought and died defending london was 20 yrs old, so that an old man with a stick could be ignored in 2016

Everything is going backwards. We ALMOST had a utopian society or at least on the way to one.People had courtesy, respect, generosity and were friendly to each other. We stopped at red lights and gave way to each other at junctions and received a nod of thanks for our kindness.we even stopped throwing litter in the streets.. All GONE!!
