Tourists in Pushkar, India, have taken to busking as a means to raise money after the country’s shortage of banknotes rendered them “virtually penniless”.

在印度布什格尔的外国游客们都已靠街头表演来筹钱，因为这个国家的钞票短缺使他们变得“身无分文”。

The holidaymakers, who hail from Germany, Australia and France, told Hindustan Times that they were performing in the street to raise money “as a last resort” after the demonetisation of 500 and 1,000 rupee (￡6 and ￡12) notes left them struggling to buy even food and water..

In a bid to crack down on tax evasion and corruption, the Indian government announced earlier this month - with no warning - that 86 per cent of the country’s notes were no longer legal tender. The unexpected move triggered chaos, as thousands of people queued up to change their cash into smaller denominations and ATMs and banks ran out of cash.

为了打击逃税和腐败，本月早些时候印度政府在事先毫无预警的情况下宣布本国百分之86的钞票今后不再是法定货币。这一出乎意料的举动引发了混乱，数以千计的人被迫排队去把他们手中的钱换成小额钞票，而自动取款机和银行已经耗尽了资金。

The busking tourists played music and danced in the streets near Pushkar’s Brahma temple, holding signs that read ‘You can help us’ and ‘Money problem.’

“Locals have been kind to us. So far we have collected around Rs2600 [￡30],” one of the German tourists told Hindustan Times. The travellers plan to use the money to travel to Delhi, where they will appeal to their government embassies for financial assistance.

The holidaymakers told the newspaper that they had been unable change their defunct banknotes: “My friend and I stood outside an SBI bank and another friend stood outside an ATM for three hours but as soon as our turn came, the cash was exhausted,” said Adalene, a French tourist.

游客们告诉记者他们换不掉掉手中的废钞，来自法国的Adalene说：“我和一些朋友在印度国家银行外等，而另一些朋友在自动取款机外等，三小时后轮到我们了但是没钞票了。”



Telegraph Travel’s Digital Editor Oliver Smith, who visited Delhi and Rajasthan last week, experienced the currency panic first-hand. “The Foreign Office advises using credit and debit cards, which is fine at most hotels, but it's impossible to eat out, visit the sights or take a tuktuk without a ready supply of cash,” he said.

“My girlfriend and I spent two hours on our first day queuing to use an ATM in Delhi. Tempers were frayed and some locals had to be calmed down by the security guards on duty. When we finally reached the front, both of our bank cards were declined! We then spent another hour queuing at a different bank to exchange around ￡100 of defunct currency – bought in the UK prior to the demonetisation – into acceptable denominations.

“在到达德里的第一天我和我的女朋友就花了两个小时排队用自动取款机。当地的人们发火了但保安让他们冷静下来。最后轮到我们时我们两个人的银行卡都不能用！我们又花了1个小时去别的银行换掉了大概100英镑的废钞。”

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said there is “chaos everywhere” due to the cash shortage; however Indian prime minister Narendra Modi has vowed to continue his war against corruption and tax defaulters.

“If unaccounted money is found out during the current clean up drive, accounts of tax evaders dating back to the country's independence in 1947 will be checked. If required I will hire people for this task,” he told journalists.

The Foreign Office has advised tourists in India to use credit or debit cards “instead of cash where possible,” adding that tourists should be able to exchange “foreign currency or old notes of not more than 5,000 rupees into legal tender”.

“If you’re exchanging money at a bank, take a form of photographic identification and expect long queues,” it stated.

It's really sad to see our tourists facing such extreme circumstances. I appreciate their attitude in fighting their problems. These guys are really street smart. I appreciate the fast they accepted the fact that Demonetization would bring favourable changes. last but not the  least I would request our government to help them pave their way back home. Hope I was of some help for them.

This is not new for them.. They do perform on streets of their countries to earn extra.. Here they are doing it to cope with the phase.. Nothing was promised to them.. They have to bear it.. :)

Are u serious. Most of these tourists are hippies, and many of them are illegal residents overstaying there tourist visas (Israelis especially!). They stay around Rajasthan & Himachal, consume resources & leave behind drugs & alcohol. Demonitization for these kind is a minor inconvenience. The ACTUAL tourists in the country should be shown, not these kind. Call me a Bhakt or whatever, this move is a GOOD move but it should've been planned better. The only one's who can't see the good side are those with religious / political differences : (.

你们是认真的吗。这些外国游客大部分都是嬉皮士，他们中大部分都是旅游签证过期的非法居民（特别是以色列人！）它们滞留在拉贾斯坦邦和喜马偕尔邦消耗资源只留下毒品和酒精。废钞令对这帮货色只是个小小的不便。应该去显示在乡下的真正游客而不是这种货色。随便你们喊我莫迪走狗之类的，废钞令是好事只是应该计划的更好点。因为宗教和政治分歧有些人才看不到它的好。
