Visitors to Venice are being surprised bythe lack of water in the city which has left many of the world-famous gondolasbeached on the muddy canal beds.

This is the second year in a row where thecity has seen historically low tidal levels.

Instead of water, tourists are beingconfronted by lines of mud snaking through the city.

Last year, water levels were reported as 28 inches below normal levels,curtailing transport by gondola or water taxi for much of the day.
