Chinese school allows students to borrow marks from 'grade bank' to pass tests

Many of us have been there: hopelessly unprepared for an exam, wishing we had studied more and certain of a failing mark. Now for students at one school inChina, success is guaranteed, but it comes at a price.

A high school in eastern China has set up a “grade bank”, where students who would normally fail a test can borrow points to push them over the line into a passing mark.

But nothing in life is free, and students must repay their borrowed grades with even higher scores on a future exam. Students can also do extra work in the form of lab experiments or public presentations to repay the bank.

China’s education system is heavily dependent on just a few major exams, with entry into college almost entirely determined by one test in the final year of school. Students are under so much pressure to perform, many attempt increasingly hi-tech methods of cheating. Spy cameras and radio devices have been found hidden in jewellery, spectacles, wallets, pens, rulers and underwear.

“The purpose of exams are for students to uate, correct and improve their studies, not to make things difficult, punish, destroy student’s enthusiasm,” Huang Kan, a director at the school, told the Yangtse Evening News.

LOL now that's what I call grade inflation.

SO... if your 'china-japan war history' isn't so good, you offset it with your better 'chairman Mao is the best' history scores... makes sense...

所以。。。

This is more than a little bizarre. Apart from reinforcing the belief that education is like money - something you can borrow, invest or lose, rather than something you earn - it also allows students to game the system by transferring points from subjects they are strong in to subjects they are weak in. This gives a false impression to university admissions officers that a student has a broad rather than a narrow knowledge base, and it also undermines the integrity of exams which can only - and should always - measure a students' performance on the day.

Like the financial system, this grade bank is rigged for the rich and powerful, The so called princelings will "borrow" grades and never pay them back... Just like their parents do from Chinese banks.

That is not a bad idea! When I was in school we had closed book exams but we could bring in a "cheat sheet" that we had to turn in with the exam, there was a penalty for using one and a larger penalty for too much cheat sheet content. The instructors got to see what we thought was important and hard to remember so they could improve their lessons. It was a win-win all around.

It's a terrible idea, because it allows students to artificially inflate their grades. Whether they do so with 'credits' earned from other exams is irrelevant. The whole point of an exam (and indeed any form of summative assessment) is to measure a students' performance against set criteria. If they meet that criteria, they do well. If they don't, they don't. Thus has it ever been in education, and no amount of financial gobbledygook concerning a so-called 'grade bank' will change that.

How about the ingredients in Chinese food exported to your kitchen, you believe those?
You believe any data coming out of China?
