When Stefano Boeri imagines the future of urban China he sees green and lots of it. Office blocks homes and hotels decked from top to toe in a verdant blaze of shrubbery and plant life; a breath of fresh air for metropolises that are choking on a toxic diet of fumes and dust.

Last week the Italian architect famed for his tree-clad Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) skyscraper complex in Milan unveiled plans for a similar project in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing.

The Chinese equivalent ? Boeri's first in Asia ? will be composed of two neighbouring towers coated with 23 species of tree and more than 2500 cascading shrubs. The structures will reportedly house offices a 247-room luxury hotel a museum and even a green architecture school and are currently under construction set for completion next year.

But Boeri now has even bolder plans for China: to create entire “forest cities” in a country that has become synonymous with environmental degradation and smog.

'You can taste it in the air': your stories of life in polluted cities

“We have been asked to design an entire city where you don't only have one tall building but you have 100 or 200 buildings of different sizes all with trees and plants on the facades” Boeri told the Guardian. “We are working very seriously on designing all the different buildings. I think they will start to build at the end of this year. By 2020 we could imagine having the first forest city in China.”

Anyone who had had the misfortune to visit London recently will know it is not just the Chinese who have a problem.

I know what you mean. I live on a small island on the Pacific ocean. It is a rural community with mostly farms and rain forest. Lots and lots of nature. It is my normal but when I travel to these big cities I can't believe how it smells and how it chokes. I love London but i couldn't live there for long.

London is 47% green space. I lived for many years in Beijing and one thing I know is it has very few parks and green spaces. Perhaps we can look to how fabulously Londons green space is cleaning the air....or not. Let's tackle the source and not try to create natural sponges that don't work.

As an expat who used to live in Shanghai this is how it will play out. Developer spruiks "green" development middle class flock to buy overpriced apartments project gets built owners move in something breaks down in the irrigation system fingers are pointed no one takes the blame developer washes their hands of whole situation plants die architect has egg on his face. Repeat.

So true. China is only good for mining gold from video games.

The how come the many trees and shrubs in the streets and parks don't die with half the year minus rain? Plant the right species they survive on rain alone. Simple.

Putting them on the side of buildings is different though. You can't just suck up water from the ground.

Singapore has started to do this a bit. I'm not sure if it's to fight pollution (it could be) but aesthetically it's pretty wonderful to begin to see vertical gardens on some high-rise buildings there.

There are a few German cities which do though the idea there goes more in the direction of having gardens in urban areas and at unusual places so that people can grow their own stuff if they want.

Give me tree lined streets anyway. Lots of trees. Indigenous trees. Winding strips of forest through the city with foot and cycle paths. No cars.

That's called a linear park in my locale. A former rail line now The Galloping Goose Trail is 55 km of urban/suburban linear park for easy walking and cycling.

You would love Odessa (Ukraine). Almost all streets have extremely wide sidewalks with huge trees. An amazing city and easy to visit (and no visa is required).

Yes the air is bad and do let's fix that. And I do love a vertical garden as much as the next ape. But the problem should be tackled right at the source: cars industry and agriculture - not by pasting the Shire all over buildings. The leaves falling from city trees are considered toxic waste. Hiding bad substances in leaves only shifts the problem. This green Gotham nightmare also raises a lot of new sustainability problems in terms of water supply maintenance pest control hygiene...

They do not have bad air because there is not enough vegetation but because their industry is not clean. It's like when you are sick but you take shower three times a day hoping that it will help somehow. By all means plant all those trees (it IS a good thing) but that won't solve the problem.

China also suffers from a water deficit and heavily polluted water. These futuristic forest cities are going to be using lots of water.

undercoverguyzer  ID4422636 5d ago
But they might not need more than rainfall? Planting trees on that scale might even create a high precipitation microclimate from the trees themselves. Though TBH I'm not sure if that is a myth.

In Sydney we do the exact opposite. We raze our rural areas to the ground tearing up old growth trees pour concrete and bitumen all over everywhere and put power and infrastructure (apart from public transport of course) in all at huge expense and then what do we do? Zone it for one storey houses. Then we replant a couple of token trees to make it look green and 'sustainable' leaving ourselves with a massive heat island serious storm-water run off issues and a diminishing access to fresh food and water.

FFS.... And that's not just the case for the geniuses in NSW planning either (although it is particularly pronounced in Sydney the car capital of Australia) its endemic in all the capital cities.
