China now has more than 100 cities of over 1 million residents a number that is likely to double in the next decade.
According to the Demographia research group the world’s most populous country boasts 102 cities bigger than 1 million people many of which are little known outside the country – or even within its borders.
Quanzhou for example on the south-east coast of China was one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world a millennium ago when it served as a hub for traders from across Asia and the Middle East. It is now home to more than 7 million people nearly 800000 more than Madrid.

But while Madrid is a cultural powerhouse and the centre of Spanish politics Quanzhou with its 1000-year-old mosque and charming cafes is rarely discussed even within Chinese media whereas Beijing Shanghai and Hong Kong continue to get most of the headlines.
Outside China meanwhile few will even have heard of Kaifeng a former imperial capital that was once a terminus on the Silk Road or Weihai both cities bigger than Liverpool (estimated population of urban area 880000).
The scale of China’s urban ambitions is staggering: it now has 119 cities bigger than Liverpool. By 2025 according to a report by the McKinsey Global Institute that number is predicted to have more than doubled.

One reason is that the government is actively encouraging rural residents to urbanise. China aims to have 60% of its people living in cities by 2020 up from 56.1% currently and the World Bankestimates a billion people – or 70% of the country’s population – will be living in cities by 2030.
Thousands of government officials have campaigned across the country to convince farmers to move to newly built urban districts turning centuries-old villages into ghost towns.
Another factor? China’s centre is moving west. Guiyang for example topped a few lists of the best-performing Chinese city last year as the once-sleepy capital of the country’s poorest province saw a boom in cloud computer servers and telecommunications with e-commerce giant Alibaba a major investor.

In the case of Trump the first 1% person ever to get elected and fill the White House with actually lobby folk it was the credulous uneducated who voted him in the educated saw through his snake oil which of course to the bright is nakedly transparent. Bit of a stretch to claim it is the other way round.

When you talk of subtlety you seem to be describing the West in China the state line is more blunt so doesn't really work on the brightest. Propaganda is universal in all states. Authoritarian states are more blunt and obvious democratic states have the appearance of liberation yet still it is well documented how the population is controlled though subtle mind control. Don't question the meaning of life just work and buy and mistake the imposed and bought reality of the ruling elite for normal existence. The people are so very confused they even voted a 1% member as their saviour who is now cementing that 1%'s rule at the people and environment's expense. You should visit China and learn how nuanced wry and subtle the educated can be. Sometimes they seem far less credulous precisely because they have an authoritarian one party state.

Not the people I talk to. There has been a big change in the past year. One year ago there was far more liking for democracy Duerte Brexit and Trump has simply brought home to them perhaps 1/3rd of the Chinese population is very rustic and basically educated so might not be capable of trust with such imported decisions if even if the long developed West democracy can go so very wrong. They are asking big questions about how you could prevent such calamities. Very few believe what the press says on the matter it tends to be the uneducated who swallow the party line.

Really impressive. It's amazing to think what will China look like when it fully develops. In 30 to 40 years from now when their purchasing power rises and their middle class becomes the majority. As many economists have pointed out their clusters of cities aka mega regions will drive their economy and innovation. It has been estimated that within couple of decades the Chinese economy will surpass the EU and US combined. It's scary in a way to think there will be a nation 4 times more powerful than the US is today.. The 21st century will be the century of unxs small countries should form unxs otherwise they stand no chance against beasts like China and India. And by small countries i mean countries like Germany and UK countries with populations of just one Chinese province. Brexit might sound like a good idea to some people now but in a couple of decades i suspect they will regretting it.

China's workforce has already stopped growing. India 's rate of growth has also dramatically slowed with several southern states at zero.
The population issue is looking far better than what we would have imagine in 2005...
However CO2 levels are at 408.. so that is the number one tipping point now.

"Why does it care so much about Scottish independence for example." Are you saying that with a straight face? Now i wonder why a British publication would care about Scottish independence? hmm...

Perhaps it is you who needs to learn more about China. Try this article for starters: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2009/dec/14/china-historic-sites-survey More recently an edition of Click (the BBC News channel Tech programme) covered a project in Shanghai to digitally preserve an ancient district which is rapidly being demolished and replaced with medium-rise identikit blocks.

A powerful central government sometimes can make good things happen like the article mentioned that the focus of developments were moving from coastal cities to poorer interior areas. The transition of development from coastal to interior is caused by many reasons but government policy plays an important role.
MrWangincanada

The Chinese cities are cleaner better planned have more efficient transportation and seem more liveable than the West Midlands. Cleaner yes. Better planned? Well unlike most old UK cities they (the new bits at least) have been planned - albeit there doesn't seem to be much in the way of a strategy. Just build like crazy... Transportation... parts of it are efficient yes - the high speed rail lixs you mention are amazing (but you do need to book a trip at least 3 days in advance - more around Chinese New Year) or you'll end up on their roads which - other than the motorway network - are largely appalling. I've travelled down more than one road in Zhengzhou which better resemble a roller-coaster than an actual thoroughfare... Even the motorway network which at least isn't massively pot-holed is subject to truly biblical traffic jams - not helped by the chaotic driving which is completely out of control.

Demographica statistics are often dodgy. As a town planner I have examined several of their data sets over the years and they often 'mix and match' data from different sources and from different years in the same set. One figure can be from 2015 and another in the same set be from 2009. There is often no attempt to find a common denominator or normalisation of the data so often it is not an "apples with apples" comparison. I would not recommend them as a journalistic source but they have an active publicity campaign and regularly push stuff out to the media. Very few journalists seem to take the time to dig into their background (property lobbyists) or find corroborating sources that have more rigorous bases.

Actually I've stayed at least overnight in 27 of the cities listed in the article.
And I specifically excluded "showpieces" like UNESCO sites.
Many Chinese cities seem to have knocked down their genuine old areas and built new tourist-oriented "old towns."
