When Jianjun Xu woke up one morning in May 2015 the ground floor of his house in Gongcheng Guilin was flooded. After heavy rainstorms the nearby Cha River swelled sweeping away hundreds of homes. “The water was up to my knees” he says. “It smelled awful and there was garbage floating in my living room.”

Xu didn't understand how the floodwater had reached his street. Anti-flood barriers had been under construction since December 2012. Given the speed of Chinese infrastructure work he thought the project had been completed. But instead of a construction site he found a green river its banks decorated with garbage.

Meanwhile buses choke Guilin's main boulevards morning and evening. Led by guides large groups of tourists take selfies in front of local landmarks such as the imposing Nengren Temple and stroll the streets of Guilin's old town and through its spacious parks. In the evening they gather to enjoy a daily performance of an ancient opera or join local groups of elderly residents who dance to keep fit.

No wonder the biggest buyers of bitcoin and the biggest buyers of real estate in London Darwin and Vancouver are Chinese. When a train wreck is imminent it is better to be a long way off.

I think you might be overstating it a bit! Its a very big country with plenty of space and plenty of places which arent polluted. I was in Yangshoa two years ago and it didnt seem thst bad. Guilin is hardly Chinas most beautifal city anyway.

It's the tourist's conundrum. Do you avoid the place because of the rubbish or do you decide to go before the place gets worse. I just wish that sense of patriotism we keep hearing that is omnipresent in China could be applied to its natural wonders.

There's no point in waiting and hoping for the rubbish to go away so I think people should enjoy things before they get worse. If everyone held out because of the rubbish no one would visit India and many other places.

Guilin isn't nearly as bad as this article makes out. Nevertheless it's not a well looked-after city being quite messy and dirty. Trouble is the locals know that the surrounding countryside is so beautiful that the tourists will keep coming no matter what. Sad to say but they've become lazy. Mind you it's a lot better than Yansghuo which is just tourist-filled hellhole these days. But if you drive out for ten minutes in any direction you won't see another white face probably for months at a time. And the countryside is just as wonderful.
 
桂林并不像文中所说的那样糟糕。 虽然现在的桂林已大不如前又乱又脏，真正的问题是当地人知道这里景色优美，就算自己躺着，也有源源不断的游客来送钱。注意啊就算这么差劲也比如今挤满游客的阳朔好多了。但是如果你往任意方向开车10分钟，你不会看到任何白人面孔，可能几个月才能见到一个。那里的乡下地区一样非常美。

Longsheng otoh is still relatively civilised. It's quite difficult to get to it involves quite a bit of walking to get around and there aren't any big hotels. Definitely still worth a visit.

而龙胜就感觉干净不少，因为很难到达，要走相当多的路，也没有什么大酒店。绝对值得一游。

I visited China in 2009 and unfortunately did find parts of Guilin to have a real litter/rubbish problem especially around the river. I do agree that the scenery was stunning and loved Longsheng.

Fortunately we in the west have no problem with pollution. China who produces most of the world's crap while pulling millions out of poverty should really just be ashamed of how much slightly better we in the west are.

I think we're all aware of the fact that pollution is no one country's fault and the US (rightly) also gets plenty of criticism in this regard. However there are very simple steps the Chinese government could take to help tackle these problems (not preventing NGOs media and citizens from investigating and reporting them freely for example) steps which they don't take because they're so petrified of any power being held by someone other than the Party. Instead they insist on the central government leading everything meaning it becomes an immense struggle to implement and monitor even simple policies at a local level. It's the same situation with corruption and the two issues are of course not unrelated...

That caption on the main photo is incorrect- that isn't the city of Guilin. It looks like one of the villages near Yangshuo.

China has opted for the Western mode: consumerism environmental destruction unrestrained 'development'.
The results will be the same but because this is China multiply the misery to the max.

Its consumerism and capitalism in its truest rawest most rampant sense. We lived there for many years and what always struck me is just how capitalistic the Chinese are this coupled with central planning and a degree of unity unseen in Western economies is a very potent mix. It is my belief that the Chinese are going to take the Americans to the cleaners as the US withdraws from world trade international organisations turns their back on science and embraces xenophobia they are leaving the world stage open for China. And the Chinese will not hesitate to take full advantage of Americas absence.
Don't get me wrong I have no love for the Chinese government but with the current clown in WH the future for Chinese world leadership looks very bright.
