The restaurant Kujiraya -- literally a whale meat store -- opened in front of abusy railroad station, introduces various ways to eat whale, including raw"sashimi" and one-pot meals, while providing rare parts of whalessuch as tongue.

Whale meat was once a common dish including for school lunch menus in Japan buthas disappeared from the dinner table as domestic consumption of whale meatshrank to several thousand tons a year from around 200,000 tons in 1960s asconsumers opted for cheaper imported meats.

Many supermarkets and department stores in Japan are seen hesitant aboutdealing in whale meat amid long-standing debate on whaling in the internationalcommunity.

According to Syuhari Co, the operator of the restaurant, it hasbecome difficult to suggest to restaurants various ways to eat whale meat asthe number of wholesalers has decreased.

If you step on an ant, it dies instantly.There's no way to slaughter whales, dolphins, and large marine animals quicklywith any sort of precision. They're large size also makes their physiology amystery despite all the "research" conducted by Japan. We still don'tknow how long they're alive and left to suffer after being harpooned, draggedto exhaustion, and pulled aboard. That's why eating whales is cruel.
It's not about how cute or emotionallyattached we are to the animals. If you live in a part of a world where monkeys,rabbits, dogs, etc. are the only source of protein, by all means do it butslaughter them quickly and humanely. Japan has options. There's no reason tochose the cruel one, regardless of tradition. We abandon cruel and pointlesstraditions all the time, it's called progress.

You're right, Japan doesn't care. It's notthat they don't have standards for safe mercury levels, it's just that theydon't enforce it for tuna and whales. Tuna already exceeds their own standardsof safety, whales due to their size exceed it more. How can we be sure of theeffects on the population if they won't do the research? Mercury doesn't justcause physical sickness, it's linked to a host of less obvious conditions inmental health like depression, learning disabilities, etc.

Then please do a little research about your"food culture". If I recall correctly Japanese only started eatingwhale in the first place because of widespread starvation and famine. Could bewrong.
So if you are trying to "protect"it, teach the people that it was only eaten as an "emergency" foodand not as a delicacy.
School lunches served it because it wasCHEAP, no other reason. Now people don't eat it because, depending upon how itis prepared, it just aint that great anyway, not to mention all the harmfulchemicals in the meat.

You THINK? No you don't think, you arebrainwashed. Typically thinking means to come to a conclusion based upon aprocess, something you obvious are unfamiliar with......chewiness, that'sanother way of saying FAT.

They aren't hesitant to stock it because ofany 'long-standing debate'. They are hesitant to stock it because it doesn'tsell and it's more profitable to give the shelf space to something else.

I love whale meat. I often eat it when I goto sushi. People saying it's disgusting, have you ever even eaten it? Pffft.
Doesn't say much about your tastes now doesit? Yeah I tried it, and the sushi place I frequent served it a couple oftimes, BUT more importantly the owner of the place doesn't keep it on hand. Youknow why? It's because the over-whelming number of customers dont like it, sowhy stock something that wont sell!
Dont fall for the media BS.

A press release from the Japan WhalingAssociation filtered through Kyodo and presented as news to foreign readers,full of lies, half-truths and total fabrications. No-one in their right mindwould eat whale as it's full of mercury. A lot of what is sold as whale is infact dolphin or porpoise. Deliberately mis-labeled and full of poison; whatkind of food culture is that?

Well if you love whale like I do .. thenenjoy this Whale Recipe
Whale & Avocado Wasabi Mayo Donburi
Fresh sashimi whale beef block 100ml SoySauce 200ml Sweet Red Wine 50ml Mirin 1 Tbsp. Sugar 1 Avocado 1⁄4 cup KewpieMayonnaise Wasabi to taste. (☆) Nori Strips
In a saucepan, add soy sauce, wine, mirin,sugar, and bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes, pour in to abowl and refrigerate until very cold.
  Heata frying pan on high heat, add a little oil, sear tuna on all sides for 3~4seconds, place in the very cold wine marinate and return to refrigerator for noless than 2 hours.
 Cut avocado in half, remove seed/skin and slice or cube, depending onhow hard the avocado is.
  Ina bowl mix mayonnaise, wasabi to taste, add avocado and coat gently.
 Thinly slice the tuna, place steamed rice in a bowl, top with slicedtuna, then avocado wasabi mayo mixture.
 Garnish with nori strips.

This should read, "It was force-fed toschool children who were given no other choice."
No-one in their right mind would eat whaleas it's full of mercury.
This statement is not entirely true. Thisonly applies to toothed whales and dolphins. However, the mislabelling ofdolphin meat as whale meat is common practice although, I'm confident thisparticular store would not be involved in this practice. This mislabelling ismost common in cheap izakayas (restaurant pubs).
Japan's whale hunting 'research' is allabout proving there are enough whales to create a sustainable harvest of thewhales. However, the point missing from all their "Hoo-Haa" is, whilethere may very well be enough of certain species of whales to support acommercial harvest, there is not a commercially viable market for theconsumption of the meat. At present, during their annual hunt in the southernoceans they catch around 3-400 whales, which is far less than they intend tocatch thanks to the eco-pirates Sea Shepherd. However, most of the meat fromthis measly catch is not consumed and is stored in freezers all around thecountry. This would also mean, this particular shop is using this meat that mayhave been frozen for years. No wonder it's tender! While I agree that Japandoes have small percentage of people who 'voluntarily' eat whale meat. Callingforce-fed school lunches a food culture is utter rhetoric!

日本的捕鲸“研究”全是为了证明海洋里有足够多的鲸鱼,可以对鲸鱼进行持续的捕获。但他们忽略掉的一点是,就算某个种类的鲸鱼有足够的数量可以进行商业捕捞,却缺少消费这种肉类的商业市场。目前,日本每年在南海的捕获量是300-400头鲸,仍远远少于他们打算的捕获量,感谢回声海盗-海洋守护者协会。但这少的可怜的捕获量中的大部分鲸鱼肉都没被消费而是在全国各个冷藏库中储存着。这也就意味着,这家烧烤店提供的鲸鱼肉可能是几年前捕获的。难怪吃起来这么嫩!我同意只有少部分的日本人“自愿的”吃鲸鱼肉。号召强迫学校午餐食用鲸鱼肉的饮食文化是彻彻底底的花言巧语。
