There’s a little piece of Qingdao in most Chinese restaurants around the world. Under the romanised name of Tsingtao, those emerald bottles are usually the native beer option on the menu – a legacy of the brief German occupation of this coastal city lying halfway between Shanghai and Beijing. Now home to around 9 million people, making it 20th on China’s jostling roster of urban centres, its quirky architecture and relative lack of crowding supposedly make it one of the country’s most “liveable” cities.

Make no mistake though Qingdao is growing. It’s one of the biggest ports in China and is one of the top 10 busiest in the world. Now the focus is on the construction of the Qingdao Movie Metropolis in Huangdao district: a massive film-production facility and theme park that is hoped will make the city in the words of the giant hànzi on the overlooking hill “Movie Metropolis of the East”.

I hate the term ''hollywood of the east'' implying some kind of ''western'' superiority. Hollywood is 'American and not ''western'' why do you give credit to other countries as if they have contributed to teh success of hollywod? China's movie industry is Chinese whatever they wanna call it they have their own movies and movie styles just like Americans. Stop lumping big regions into one basket it's ridiculously inaccurate although i would see why Europeans would enjoy it. Everyone wants to be associated with America and their success.

Hollywood remains the premium source of global movies. Bollywood maybe $bigger but largely domestic. China flm production abd global attraction has a very long way to go esp with stupud CCP paranoia limiting themes and stories

God I am so pleased I went there in 1985 87 and 93 Fantastic sea food best beer in China but they can keep the plastic bags and they can go an $tu$f their high rises now cause lifes far too short to spend time on algae ridden beaches. Qingdao blew it when they started destroying the old town. Great people shame about their govt. So easily bribed especially for high rises.

I was there in 2008 at the time of the annual Qingdao beer festival. The Qingdao beer is served fresh and it's delicious. Seafood too. China is very interesting.

The drinks in plastic bags thing is common to much of Asia. One sees fruit juice consumed that way in Malaysia and Singapore.

Great city. Lived there for 5 years or so. Would recommend to anyone. Also much cheaper than many of the other big cities. Nice people. Cool bars. Old Jack's is a legacy. Just the winters freeze the bollocks off because of the wind from the Yellow Sea.

This can be hazardous. My Qingdao wife's uncles and I had a party and we draped one too many bags over the back of a chair; when it went over there was a Tsingtao tsunami across the floor!

In my local Kingway (alcohol content: negligible taste: non-existent) BBQ place they frequently over order on the beer jugs. One jug per person is usual but they can't drink it. So at the end of the evening it's poured into the plastic bags. What then? I don't know.

During the 2003 SARS epidemic when everyone in Beijing was wearing a mask Qingdao was a seafront haven with that sea breeze reassuring residents the air they breathed was clean enough. And the beaches on the weekend were virtually empty. The downside is the Qingdao winter: miserably cold and windy. For that reason I can't see it competing with climes sunny all year long.
