The Turkish foreign minister has accused Germany of engaging in 'blackmail and threats' after it warned citizens to be 'cautious' when visiting the country.

During a visit to Cyprus Mevlut Cavusoglu said a relationship with Germany 'cannot be pursued based on blackmail and threats' after accusing German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel of a 'one-sided and distorted approach'.

It comes after six activists including Peter Steudtner and Amnesty International's Turkey director Idil Eser were all detained after a police raid on a hotel where they were attending a digital security workshop on July 5.

She told RTL Television that Mr Steudtner 'does this kind of work because he believes in non-violence and believes in ways to make this world and our societies a better place.

She added: 'I am hoping for the release of Peter...and that all these current accusations are simply dropped.'

The German foreign ministry subsequently warned it could no longer guarantee its citizens' safety in the country due to the current wave of arrests and called for Turkey to release the activists.

It added Germany would review state guarantees for foreign investment in Turkey and urge businesses against putting their money in the country.

But Mr Cavusoglu accused Mr Gabriel of making 'ill-tempered statements' against Turkey after the country rejected an alleged request for 'Turkey to interfere in the judiciary.'

Mr Cavusoglu said: 'They request that (German citizens) be released at once they even give a time-frx... in other words they make requests that snub the independence of the judiciary.'

The country has been angered by the recent arrests of rights activists and journalists in Turkey who have included German nationals.

But the Turkish Foreign Ministry accused Germany of putting those 'on trial and German guests who come to our country as tourists on the same scale.'

It said that there had been a 'serious confidence crisis' in Turkish-German relations in recent months due to what the ministry described as Germany's 'approach of double standards'.
