Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has reiterated his desire to have another national car project, now that Proton has been sold to China.
“Proton is no longer our national car. It is now owned by China.
“Our ambition is to start another national car, maybe with some help from Asean countries and our other partners,” Mahathir said during the Nikkei Conference in Tokyo today.

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak engineered the sale of a 49.9 percent stake in Proton to China’s Geely last year.
前总理Najib Abdul Razak去年计划出售宝腾给中国吉利49.9%的股份。
DRB-Hicom, which is owned by tycoon Syed Mokhtar Albukhary, holds the remaining 50.1 percent stake in Proton.
DRB HICOM,是由大亨Syed Mokhtar Albukhary拥有的,持有宝腾50.1%的剩余股份。
Previously, Mahathir had said that the federal government does not intend to buy back Proton, as it no longer owns what was formerly the national carmaker.
此前,马哈蒂尔曾说过,联邦政府不打算回购宝腾,因为它不再拥有以前的汽车制造商。
The company, which was started in 1984, was Mahathir’s brainchild.
该公司成立于1984,是马哈蒂尔的智囊团。
“I would say, if I cannot get Proton (back), I have some idea about starting another automotive (company), remembering of course, that the idea of building a national car is not just for the sake of having a national car, but as a catalyst for growing our engineering know-how and capability,” he had said.
“我会说,如果我不能拿回到宝腾,我有一个想法,开始另一个汽车(公司),当然记得,建立一个民族汽车的想法不只是为了拥有一辆全国汽车,而是作为一个催化剂,以提高我们的工程知识和能力,”他曾说。
if you want to increase our engineering and know how capability it is better that we embark on a conventional missiles capability especially the short range anti ships and anti aircrafts missiles.We need this because in future the south china sea will see an increase of warships and fighter planes plying our seas and air space.If we cannot afford to built warships and planes to counter them at least we can shoot them out of our skies and territorial waters effectively.
如果你想让我们的工程知识水平进步,知道我们有能力使用常规导弹,特别是近程反舰导弹和反航空器导弹,我们需要这样做——因为将来会在中国南海看到中国的军舰和战斗机增加。

if it is a viable business models, many malaysian tycoons would have started a car business. the protectionism of bumiputera policy will not allows the best malaysian to run a national car company and will definitely fail in an international, borderless business such as car production
如果这是一个可行的商业模式,许多马来西亚大亨将开始汽车业务。
BumiPrTeA(马来西亚的国民阵线,马来西亚的政党关系好像挺乱的,毕竟民族x0x0)政策的保护主义不会允许最好的马来西亚经营一家全国性的汽车公司,而且肯定会在汽车生产等国际无国界业务中失败。

with respect, there are greater pressing issues than the need for a national car..we have been down this road and ended up doing mainly rebadging work..the tech that came out like Campro did not do well. And we are opposed to increases of more efficient alternatives in the marketplace in order to force the Rakyat down the path of a national car.
出于尊重地说,有个更迫切的问——其实我们已经走在这条路,最终却做的是贴牌(汽车)工作……的技术,像Campro根本没有做好。
