Soft European cheese has fallen on hard times in China. Customs officials have banned a host of soft mould-ripened cheese for containing “too much bacteria” with authorities reportedly alarmed the mould contained colonies of bacteria that had not been officially approved.

The ban mainly affects French and Italian cheese including brie camembert gorgonzola and roquefort as well as the English delicacy stilton.

Sinodis a distributor of foreign-based cheeses in Shanghai sent a letter to customers announcing “cheese products containing certain moulds cannot temporarily be imported in China”. The company has stopped importing a laundry list of nearly 50 kinds of cheese since 23 August. The ban started in July in some cities but was expanded nationwide this week.

“There is no good reason for the ban because China considers the same cheese safe if produced in China” William Fingleton a spokesman for the delegation of the European unx to China said in an email. “This effectively means that China is banning famous and traditional European cheeses that have been safely imported and consumed in China for decades. The entire Chinese market for soft cheeses is now closed.”

China imported more than ￡300m of cheese last year according to customs data but the statistics do not specify which varieties made up the bulk of that. Most of the strong pungent cheeses affected by the ban are unpopular with Chinese people and are mostly consumed by foreign residents.

The news sent expats scrambling to buy cheese from remaining stocks. Online cheese shop Cheese Republic said in statement confirming the ban: “In my opinion: no bacteria = fake cheese.”

China discourages all imports in any way it can (unless it is product for industrial use) and slaps a massive duty on any product it can label as "luxury" usually in the region of 100%. I am disappointed that Trump has not followed up on promises to tackle this issue while the rest of the world kow tow in the hope of picking up some export business. Unfortunately that export business doesn't actually happen because China keeps everything in house. I like China but the trade imbalance and the way that it is maintained is unhealthy and they should open up a bit. After all their entire prosperity is due to the West in terms of technology manufacturing expertise and markets.

To be honest im not sure i would want to buy soft cheese that has travelled from europe to china. They do have a higher risk of harmful bacteria if not kept in correct conditions. Anyway chinese people dont eat dairy nor could afford imported cheese so its hardly a key market. I love cheese but raw milk cheese is buyer beware (i do eat it!)

I think the point of the article is to imply that the Chinsese are pretending to use health concerns to fire a shot across the bows of the EU - ie it's a shot in a trade war. Although again it is very much what the EU would do. The whole point of FTAs is not about opening up trade after all - but locking other people out.

I don't think it's protectionism because there is no local stinky cheese industry worth mentioning to be protected. As the article notes these cheeses are almost exclusively consumed by foreigners in China. Given the food safety standards in China it seems insane that European cheeses should be banned but I really don't see economic reasons as a plausible explanation.
