Catalonia's government said 90 percent of those who voted in anunauthorised independence referendum chose to split from Spain.

On a day marred by clashes between police and voters, 2.26million people took part in the referendum,  regional government spokesmanJordi Turull said. That represents a turnout of  42.3 percentof Catalonia's 5.34 million voters.

The brutal scenesof police cracking down on the referendum plunged the EU into a newcrisis after hundreds of people were injured in the violent stand-offs withSpanish police.

In violent scenes beamed around the world, officers in riot gearfired rubber bullets into crowds and beat would-be voters with batons as theyqueued at polling stations.

However, the European Union remained conspicuously silent on thepolice tactics, which saw masked officers smash their way into polling stationsand forcibly remove ballot boxes.

CarlesPuigdemont, the Catalan leader, said the region had "won the right to anindependent state" after "millions" turned out to vote in abanned independence referendum.

Respondingto the unfolding crisis, Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary, told the DailyTelegraph last night: "Obviously we are very anxious about any violence.We hope that things will sort themselves out, though clearly you have to besensitive to the constitutional proprieties."
He added: "As I understand it the referendum is not legal,so there are difficulties."
Nicola Sturgeon described the Foreign Office's statement as"shamefully weak".

Mr Rosindellaccused the Spanish government of trying to “bully the people” and that theviolence “shows both Spain and the EU in a very bad light”.

Spain, meanwhile, did not waver in its assertion that thereferendum - which was ordered suspended by the Spanish constitutional court -is illegal, and that its hand has been forced by a Catalan government it claimsis engaged in a coup.

The Spanishdeputy prime minister, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, blasted the Catalangovernment’s “irresponsibility” in insisting on holding an “illegal referendumwith no democratic guarantees”, demanding that they end what she described as a“farce”.

The reason thatthe EU are silent about the violence from the Gardia Civil is that they mighthave to use the same tactics on people who want out of the EU.

欧盟对国民警卫队使用暴力保持沉默的原因是，有朝一日他们有可能用同样的方式对付那些想退出欧盟的人。

Also have theGardia done well in trying to get Gibraltar as part of Spain.  I amsure the Gibraltarians would prefer the Garda to their Bobbies!!!

To protect theEuropean people in regions like Catalonia and elsewhere the EU needs to setup astanding army urgently. Oh yes, plans already in place for that.
The Sovietunionhad gulags.
The EU haspolitical correctness.
Until last weekendthat meant you would be ostracised if you expressed the wrong opinion. Now youcan expect to be beaten up by riot police desperately trying to keep the uniontogether.
We can just expectmore of the same within the EU.

Population ofScotland = 5.4 m (most definitely a country).

I am sure DTreaders will soon , if they haven't yet..., start the tarditional bashing weare used to.....The referedum didn't have the backing of neither the Spanishgvt, nor the EU = illegal. But the Spanish authorities have been really harshon the pople, just like any country whose integrety is put at risk. Cataloniais part of Spain, right?

The violent actiontaken by the Spanish government in Catalonia against a peaceful, civil protest,is very similar to that taken by governments in countries in many parts of theworld, - Central/South America, Asia, the Far East etc. - which are viewed inthe West as being examples of governments lacking genuine democratic ideals. As a result these governments are frequently berated by Western governments fortheir use of military force to remain in power, their lack of democracy, andrefusal to address their population's wishes.
So where does thatleave the EU in this debacle?  Speechless!!
Is this proof thereality of true 'democracy' is in fact only really recognised in theEnglish-speaking world?  (I am deliberately excluding the type of'socialist democracy' practised in the EU).  
Does this provideyet another reason the the UK to go its own way?
