Baby milk formula maker Lactalis has ordered a worldwideproduct recall over fears of salmonella contamination.

Health authorities in France said 26 infants in thecountry have become sick since early December.

It covers millions of baby milk powder products marketedglobally under the Milumel, Picot and Celi brands.

The recall affects customers in Britain, Greece,Morocco, Sudan, Peru, Colombia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China.

The United States, a major market for Lactalis, is notaffected, according to information published on the French health ministry'swebsite.

The symptoms of salmonella infection include abdominalcramps, diarrhoea and fever.

Company spokesman Michel Nalet told TheAssociated Press on Monday that the ‘precautionary’ recall affects ‘severalmillion’ products made since mid-February.

Lactalis said in a statement that the 26cases of infection were linked to products branded Picot SL, Pepti Junior 1,Milumel Bio 1 and Picot Riz.

The company said a possible source of the outbreak hasbeen identified in a tower used to dry out the milk at a production site inMay.

Disinfection and cleaning measures have been put inplace at the suspected site in western France.
