Saudi Arabia has elected its first female local councillors in a historic step for a country where women are banned from driving and face routine discrimination.

Results from Saturday’s municipal council elections indicated there were about 17 female winners. These included four in Jeddah, one near Mecca – home to Islam’s holiest site – and others in Tabuk, Ahsaa and Qatif. Several more, reported by al-Sabq online newspaper, were expected to be confirmed later.

If 130,000 women of a population of 20 million Saudi nationals voted, that's about 1% of the population. None of the media stories have pointed this out. It seems they were too busy gushing over what a historic occasion it was, which it was. However, there seems to be a surprising lack of objective coverage -what does this voting actually mean and will the women elected actually be able to make a difference? Will they be allowed to by their male guardians?

I predicted this story a few days ago, in another Ian Black's announcement about "Saudi Election".
Saudi Arabia has no constitution, no real standard laws on anything. The councils this election produced have no authority, they are only advisory. 
Besides, this whole election n Saudi Arabia is a sham. It was all predetermined.

This municipal election result has been on the TV and radio all morning. The head chopping dictatorship must be very pleased with their PR agency.

Interesting that this story receives such positive coverage, particularly when out of 20 million people in Saudi Arabia only 130,000 women voted. This is such a small fraction of women in the country.

In contrast, an election by the Crimean people last year to leave Ukraine was dismissed out of hand by the West. Yet however you look at this result (even with some fiddling), an overwhelming majority of the population (almost everybody) was always going to vote to leave Russia.

The real answer, as always, is that the head chopping dictatorship of Saudi Arabia is a reliable member of the US Empire while Russia insists on being an independent sovereign nation which the Empire cannot tolerate.

Remember debt slaves: Saudi Arabia may have its faults but it is nowhere near as bad as North Korea! At least they use the US dollar!
