TOKYO —Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Sunday Japan intends to balance efforts to fight global warming with its focus on economic growth, in the wake of a landmark international agreement to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

“We’ll achieve (the goal) without sacrificing economic growth,” Abe said in a statement, as Tokyo pledged to cut emissions from 2013 levels by 26% by 2030.

Japan will not sacrifice growth in combating climate change: Abe
I wonder what growth he is referring to? Japan hasn't had any economic growth for nearly 25 years and Abe's usual reluctance to make any real change isn't going to help...

Japan will implement the agreement as a “top priority issue for the Cabinet.”
So let's not hold our breath, then?

I wonder what growth he is referring to?
Negative economic growth or Positive growth in public debt account.

Balony! Abe's not working on growth! He is working on making Japan a "normal" country. That is, getting Japan back to a militarist state involved in the glory of war. Growth = making lots of bombs and bombers.

A noble sentiment if it was spoken by someone who actually cared about economic growth for the middle class, rather than the growth of zombie corporations owned by his political cronies.
No leader will sacrifice the economy at the alter of global warming. Considering the worst pollution comes from poor countries, maybe that's a good thing.

"...... keep playing a leading role in the international community,......."
What leading role is he talking about? When I look around I see not too much "leading"!
But maybe he is again living in "his (un-)real little world"?

All Counties knew about these talk in Paris were going to achieve targets. All the big player signal there numbers and intent. Only the numbers had to agree apon. If Shinzo really knew what direction to take Japan. He and his government would had reforms on the table ready to go after these talks in Paris. The fact is he and his Government don,t but either have the opposition. Renewables are the future and these talks has signal the beginning of the end to fossil fuelled industries. Who knew what demands will be imposed in five years time at the next rounds of talks to Counties that did not achieve the goals which they signed up to. Maybe a embargo of exports to those Counties that did not reach their comment goals (Who Knows?).Come on Abe how about some forward thinking or Japan will face a certain economy bad future.

Finally a world leader who see's through the sham of global warming. I applauded you on this point Mr. Abe. I guarantee you years from now the Global Warming scam will be exposed and all the liberal's will look like the fools they are.

Japan has been growing, albeit slowly, for the last 25 years. The economy now is 60% larger than it was in 1990, even though the population has fallen. However, combatting climate change is not a barrier to growth; it is a huge potential growth area.

There something very wrong with this man's comment. Because a leader is a dealer in tomfooleries. At the same time the Japanese are the masters of all tomfooleries.

None of the developed countries have much "growth" in store, unless they have massive immigration to give the illusion of growth. That's the reality of today's global capitalism.

nakanoguy01DEC. 14, 2015 - 10:22AM JST
these global agreements aren't even worth the paper they are printed on. it's just a bunch of rich countries patting themselves on the back for a few days and then going home and maintaining the staus quo. what a waste of money.

jayshimoDEC. 14, 2015 - 10:57AM JST
Of course it's a bloody scam. The earth has warmed and cooled over millions of years with or without the influence of humans.

Anyone remember the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change? That was when Japan committed to an average of 6% below 1990 emissions between 2008-2012, with a further a promise of 25% below 1990 by 2020.
Then it changed to a goal of 3.8% below 2005 by 2020.
Now its 26% below 2013 by 2030. OK, seeing that 2013 was the highest emission year ever in Japan (the post-Fukushima high point with no nuclear energy), that target of 26% below is slightly less than what was emitted in 1990, AND they have 10 years more to do it!
1990=1.17bil tons CO2 (Kyoto Protocol pledge of minus 25% would have been 0.88bil tons by 2020)
2013=1.41bil tons CO2 (Paris pledge of minus 26% is 1.045bil tons by 2030)
But certainly this isn't the last climate deal before 2030, so the goal posts will surely be moved again....

1990=11.7亿吨CO2(京都议定书保证减少25%,那么到2020年CO2为8.8亿吨)
2013=14.1吨CO2(巴黎气候大会保证减少26%,那么到2030年CO2为10.45亿吨)
